Story
The first book in a brand-new series, The Last Kingdom is set in England during the reign of King Alfred. Uhtred is an English boy, born into the aristocracy of ninth-century Northumbria. Orphaned at 10, he is captured and adopted by a Dane and taught the Viking ways. Yet Uhtred's fate is indissolubly bound up with Alfred, King of Wessex, who rules over the only English kingdom to survive the Danish assault. The struggle between the English and the Danes and the strife between christianity and paganism is the background to Uhtred's growing up.

Publisher's Summary
From New York Times best-selling author Bernard Cornwell, the first exciting adventure in the world-renowned Sharpe series, chronicling the rise of Richard Sharpe, a private in His Majesty’s Army at the siege of Seringapatam.
“The greatest writer of historical adventures today.” (Washington Post)
Richard Sharpe. Soldier, hero, rogue - the man you always want on your side. Born in poverty, he joined the army to escape jail and climbed the ranks by sheer brutal courage. He knows no other family than the regiment of the 95th Rifles, whose green jacket he proudly wears.

Better than ever
Already listened to the Sharpie novels as read by Frederick Davison, and loved them. But Rupert Farley delivers such an awesome narration, it’s like hearing the stories for the first time. Recommended, even if you’ve heard them before.

Stellar Narration
Sure, the story itself is great. But this audiobook would be half as good without this narrator. I had to remind myself at times that all these characters were being voiced by a single man! One of the finest performances on audible! Says so in the scriptures!

Maybe it gets better, but the early chapters bored me too much to find out. I have liked some of this author’s books, but others start off sooooo slowwww.

Outstanding book and performance!!
I was blown away by both how engaging the book was and how incredible the narration turned out to be. Farley is one of the most expressive narrators I've listened to, rivaling Steven Pacey for my favorite ever doing the First Law books by Joe Abercrombie. Farley gave such distinctive voice to all the characters and put so much emotion into every line.
Cornwell also provided great raw material, full of wit and outlandish characters whom I came to root for or hate with a burning passion. The action was gritty and visceral, and I found I just couldn't put this one down. I can't wait to go through the rest of these!

fast forward a several hundred years for Uthred Ii
hats off to the author, many authors can write compelling action and many can write character driven novels on a grand scale, but in my opinion to do so without creating mundane prose while building that foundation is art. If creating compelling heroes is a gift creating compelling villains is in my opinion more difficult. This book is filled with that same inspiration that makes lost kingdom a got to novel - the hero is better than those he surrounds himself, nobility among cowards and crooks, a fastidious fighter who must contend with the rancor of rank and the punitive nature of people.
cannot wait for the x the next installment. Netflix, hulu, and prime- step up because this will make a great work for the 16:9 screen.

Phenomenal voice actor
Rupert Farley is honestly the best voice actor I have heard on audible, and I've listened to a lot of books. he does different accents and different voices, he is next level. I'm excited about listening to the rest of the Sharpe books!
