Publisher's Summary

After an embarrassing loss to her ex-girlfriend in their first basketball game of the season, Scottie Zajac gets into a fender bender with the worst possible person: her nemesis, Irene Abraham, who is as beautiful as she is mean. When the damage sends Irene's car to the shop for weeks' worth of repairs, the girls are forced to carpool for the foreseeable future.

Their rocky start only gets bumpier the more time they spend together. But when an opportunity presents itself for Scottie to get back at her toxic ex (and climb their school's social ladder at the same time), she bribes Irene into playing along.

The sapphic romcom I needed

I listened to this audiobook on a ferry ride and long road trip, and found myself not able to unplug throughout my trip. This was such an entertaining romcom and its witty dialogue moved the plot along. The story was an engaging twist on the enemies-to-lovers and fake dating tropes. At the start, the two female leads despised each other so much, I was curious how they would ever get past their differences. By the end of the book, I had fallen in love with many of the characters (especially Irene Abraham) and they stayed in my head long after the audiobook ended. This book touches on relevant themes like toxic relationships, the importance of familial support, the stereotypical perception of cheerleaders, and more. The only problem I had with the book was that some phrases that the main lead (Scottie) utters or thinks sounded more mature and adult-like than coming from a teen. Regardless, I enjoyed this book greatly and recommend it for a fun read for a trip or a long commute.

About the narration: I didn’t particularly like the narrator’s voice for this book, but she tried her best to make the characters sound distinct from one another. I would be interested in picking up a copy of this book and reading it without the narration.

very cute

I liked this story a lot. The theme is getting over your first love when the relationship was toxic. I have to say, it's good Scottie acknowledged she was messed up and doing things that weren't so nice, but I think if the book had had another hour's worth of content showing how she redeemed herself it would have been a stronger book. Still, the way she and Irene fight is funny and, despite a not nice thing Irene did to Scottie before they started carpooling I actually liked Irene better than Scottie most of the way through the book and I wished sometimes the book was from her perspective or from both of their perspectives. Even so, it dealt with its themes well and how hard it is to deal with the guilt, shame, self-image issues, and feelings of betrayal when a romantic partner treats you badly and I liked the characters. I think they did a good job of showing why Irene would have empathy for why Scottie was spinning out even before they really knew each other.

Mature content note: minor swearing, PG depictions of drinking and drugs

This was great... ish

I'm not really into high school romance. This was about what I expected, and there were times I was tempted to just find something else, but it was just good enough that I stayed. I'm glad I hung in there.

Z grew up. Watching/listening to her mature, finding out what she needs, being honest with herself and other people, reaching out and letting others help, reaching out and helping others, having the hard conversations... I loved it.

A nice romance book

3 Stars!! It was a great listen, and a cute story line, I liked how it presented how when relationships are toxic it's hard to notice that you're in a toxic place even after ur over the person it takes time.

Cute romance

It was cute not super memorable though. It was very easy to binge read/listen to it in the beginning was cute and cheeky though I had a hard time with the last bit it was pretty predictable and not as entertaining for me. I will say I liked basically all the characters and the dynamics which kept it interesting.
