Publisher's Summary

A bestial face appears at windows in the night.

In the big white house on the hill angels are said to appear.

A forgotten tenant in an isolated building becomes addicted to milk.

A strange goddess is worshipped by a home-invading disciple.

The least remembered gods still haunt the oldest forests.

Cannibalism occurs in high society at the end of the world.

The sainted undead follow their prophet to the Great Dead Sea.

A confused and vengeful presence occupies the home of a first-time buyer.

In ghastly harmony with the nightmarish visions of the award-winning writer's novels, these stories blend a lifelong appreciation of horror culture with the grotesque fascinations and childlike terrors that are the author's own.

What the critics say

"Nevill is fast becoming Britain's answer to Stephen King." ( Guardian)
"Readers will lose all hope of peaceful, undisturbed sleep. Highly recommended." ( Library Journal)
"Nevill's talent for horror resonates ominously in every scene, almost as if the theme from Jaws echoes when a page is turned." ( Kirkus)

Excellently frightening

It's been a while since I've read anything that actually frightened me and this did. Well written and interesting. Will be reading one of his novels next.

A very solid collection of shorts from Adam Nevill

A very solid collection of shorts from Adam Nevill. I enjoyed every one of these twisted tales. Some were darker than others, but they were all very well written and enjoyable. The narration for each individual story completely fit the tone of the collection. Nicely done.

Fantastic writing, wrong voice for narrator

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

possibly, they would have to be someone who can get past the narration

What was one of the most memorable moments of Some Will Not Sleep?

Pigface Thing is a solid story and the end took me quite by surprise.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

David Stifel seems to be a narrator of choice for Lovecraftian works. He has a particular style and delivery that works for the true dated Lovecraft work. He doesn't have the ability to do a wide range of accents or genders or ages, and I think he is the absolute wrong choice to voice a primarily British and mid 20s or younger selection of 1st person characters. He tries, and I like his work in other stories, but his accents take away from the stories and are detracting when he attempts them. He just doesn't fit properly. If you can look (listen?) past them then the stories are really quite varied and well crafted.

Who was the most memorable character of Some Will Not Sleep and why?

Doll Hands is a very interesting character in a very interesting world.

Any additional comments?

This is a very good selection of stories, yet a poor choice in narrator.

Dark.

Don't go into this expecting happy endings. Nevill isn't afraid of stepping into the darkness and bringing friends. Stifel is one of the best narrators around and his distinctive voice sets the mood perfectly.

Frightening in a deeper way

The diversity of voice in this collection is fascinating. The narrator changes along with the voice of each piece. Not scary in a gory way, but in a deeper way. I related to, and was frightened of, the monsters in a way that crept into my dreams. I want more from this author.

a awakening nightmare

This author captures the emotional impact of nightmare so well it's unsettling. Pig thing, and mothers milk were my personal favorite.

The cover art is the scariest part of this book.

This book fell flat for me, I finished it. Some of the stories in this collection are good but just didn't seem to go anywhere..Dont get me wrong I really enjoyed 'The Ritual' alot. But this collection of shorts was just rough around the edges

Eh

I’ll give the story 2 stars only because I didn’t finish it. So it very well could have been better by the end. But I also couldn’t finish it. Just wasn’t good.

Some strong horror fiction...

... undercut by a bewildering array of nonsensical and warbling accents that make Keanu Reeves’ performance in Dracula seem Oscar worthy.

It's okay...more than a few did not entice.

A few stories captured my interest but many seemed a bit lacking - maybe narrator bored me or maybe something was lost in the telling. Lukewarm on this one.
