I enjoyed this story and hope that there is an Audible edition of The Firebird coming up. The idea of hearing the story coming from voices from the past was intriguing and I am always interested in reading a book about Scottish history that is well researched and well written. I usually find books with dual time lines frustrating, but they work very well in this story. Both Carrie and Sophia have interesting stories going on and Kearsley did an excellent job of integrating them.
My only criticism is that the reader, who is obviously Scottish and does a good job of the Scottish accents, was totally out of her depth with a Canadian accent, sometimes rolling her "r's", sometimes with the flat nasal vowels of Boston, sometimes southern US,, sometimes a bit British. While Carrie's accent is often quite muddled, her father's is atrocious. She also made a number of pronunciation errors, which I wrote off as probably reflecting her own heritage. I have never heard anyone in Canada pronounce lichen rhyming with kitchen.

Good story, trouble with poorly done accents

A wonderful well written story which is brought to life by the narrator. A true love story with a twist...or two.

Loved it!

Loved hearing the Doric spoken aloud. Although my own Jacobite ancestors came to Nova Scotia from South Uist, I felt a strong connection to the history, and the grey sea.

Winter wonder

I really enjoyed this story. As I was getting closer towards the end I started to doubt my early suspicions about things but it concluded as I imagined or at least for the most part. The narrator is what really brought it to life for me though. Her soft tones and way of talking was perfect and I started to distinguish when she was switching between Sophia and Carrie which made it easier to switch more fluidly. Absolutely loved it. ❤️

Loved the story but the narrator is what really sold it for me ❤️
