Publisher's Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Discover the global phenomenon that tells an unforgettable story of love, loss, courage, and healing.

“Compellingly artful . . . [a] blockbuster memoir.”—The New Yorker (Best Books of the Year)

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

For Harry, this is that story at last.

Before losing his mother, twelve-year-old Prince Harry was known as the carefree one, the happy-go-lucky Spare to the more serious Heir. Grief changed everything. He struggled at school, struggled with anger, with loneliness—and, because he blamed the press for his mother’s death, he struggled to accept life in the spotlight.

At twenty-one, he joined the British Army. The discipline gave him structure, and two combat tours made him a hero at home. But he soon felt more lost than ever, suffering from post-traumatic stress and prone to crippling panic attacks. Above all, he couldn’t find true love.

Then he met Meghan. The world was swept away by the couple’s cinematic romance and rejoiced in their fairy-tale wedding. But from the beginning, Harry and Meghan were preyed upon by the press, subjected to waves of abuse, racism, and lies. Watching his wife suffer, their safety and mental health at risk, Harry saw no other way to prevent the tragedy of history repeating itself but to flee his mother country. Over the centuries, leaving the Royal Family was an act few had dared. The last to try, in fact, had been his mother. . . .

For the first time, Prince Harry tells his own story, chronicling his journey with raw, unflinching honesty. A landmark publication, Spare is full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.

Insightful, detailed, honest, beautifully written

So much anticipation for this book and so much of Harry’s life and words has been obsessed and taken out of context. He reads pleasantly and there absolutely isn’t any tone of mean-ness that the British tabloids made it out to be. It’s introspective and I appreciate him taking accountability for a lot of things (also not hiding behind a palace spokesperson but using his name on the book!). Honest historical record of what it’s like to grow up in one of the most exclusive families in the world.

New perspective on an old story

I found this book interesting, honest, and insightful. I am close to the same age as Harry and remember the events he recounts in the book. It’s very interesting to get his perspective versus what we all saw in the media or interpreted for ourselves.

The things he writes are his truth, and it’s a brave story to tell. I will be surprised if the relationship between his father and brother can be mended after this.

A must listen

Greatly organized book. A big plus that is read by the author which allows the listener to feel his pain, anger, grief and love. As a fellow sufferer from childhood trauma, associated with death, it was great to hear of his trauma journey without making it all about it. I enjoyed every part of the book. The details allowed me to imagine all those places he visited, experienced and share on the feelings. It takes lots of courage to come out and say everything that he shares with the world. Ohh I want to say so much more but don’t want to spoil it for others. All I could say is, I listened to the book over a weekend and just couldn’t get enough. Bravo!

Incredibly well written and stories.

Very moving…all I feel for this man and his family is compassion, and for the entire family, I pray healing. Not a single thing about this book is how the press said it was. I came out of this feeling compassion for even Charles - a father who himself was devoid of normalcy, doing his best with his limited human capacity. Sometimes “darling boy” is all a father can offer and that will have to do…for now.

A great book, a great read and incredibly well written!

This book was very touching!! Loved every minute of it!!

I believe that listening to Harry tell his story amped up my feelings each chapter. (Chills, laughter, anger & it even had me speaking back to Harry)
I couldn’t stop listening. It was so great to hear what actually happened to Harry after Diana passed away.
Family should always be #1 priority. Harry is the real father here!!!

Love that Harry reads his own book aloud!

Love this honest memoir by Harry as a member of the Royal family. It’s his perspective and I love that he reads it aloud! His voice is soothing and entertaining and genuine!

A beautiful exploration of humanity

Listening to a first hand account of a life is always worth it. And when the author shares themselves with humility, vulnerability, humor, and a rawness, it is a gift.

Thoughtful and inspiring. Good to hear the real story and not the sensationalist headlines. My favourite read yet.
