Story
Padawan Reath Silas is being sent from the cosmopolitan galactic capital of Coruscant to the undeveloped frontier - and he couldn't be less happy about it. But when the ship he's traveling on is knocked out of hyperspace in a galactic-wide disaster, Reath finds himself at the center of the action. The Jedi and their traveling companions find refuge on what appears to be an abandoned space station. But then strange things start happening, leading the Jedi to investigate the truth behind the mysterious station.

Thrawn’s latest triumph still rests newly on his shoulders. He has led the Chiss to victory and brought glory to the House of Mitth, but the true threat to the Ascendancy has not yet been extinguished. Their foes do not send threats or ultimatums, do not mass ships on the edge of the Chaos. Their weapons come cloaked in smiles and generosity: Gifts offered freely. Services granted unconditionally. Publisher's Summary
New York Times Best Seller • The heroes of the High Republic era return to face a shattered peace and a fearsome foe, following the dramatic events of Light of the Jedi.
In the wake of the hyperspace disaster and the heroism of the Jedi, the Republic continues to grow, bringing more worlds together under a single unified banner. Under the leadership of Chancellor Lina Soh, the spirit of unity extends throughout the galaxy, with the Jedi and the newly established Starlight Beacon station at the vanguard.
In celebration, the chancellor plans the Republic Fair, a showcase of the possibilities and the peace of the expanding Republic - a peace the Jedi hope to foster. Stellan Gios, Bell Zettifar, Elzar Mann, and others join the event as ambassadors of harmony. But as the eyes of the galaxy turn toward the fair, so too does the fury of the Nihil. Their leader, Marchion Ro, is intent on destroying this unity. His storm descends on the pageantry and celebration, sowing chaos and exacting revenge.
As the Jedi struggle to curb the carnage of the rampaging Nihil, they come face-to-face with the true fear their enemy plans to unleash across the galaxy - the kind of fear from which even the Force cannot shield them.

Disappointing
While the production quality is excellent, this book was hard for me to enjoy. As a fan of Star Wars, I tend to enjoy most pieces of Star Wars media, even finding something to like in the most hated releases from the franchise. This book proved especially challenging to like.
The characters are for the most part too numerous and too one dimensional to form any connection with. The story jumps from character to character and plot point to plot point so fast that it becomes difficult to remember who is doing what and where.
The Jedi come across as arrogant and naive, which would be an interesting take if it didn't feel like the book was trying to force you to sympathize with them. It's hard to feel sorry for characters that continuously make mistakes that are easily avoidable. Not to mention the Chancellor of the republic who repeatedly makes terrible decisions leading to the deaths of countless innocents, yet is apparently still beloved by her republic, as if she is immune to her own failures. It feels as though we're expected to love her as well, simply for existing and regardless of her incompetence. Her foil, Senator Tia Toon, is framed as a greedy war monger we're supposed to dislike, yet is the only one who actually seems to know what's best for the republic.
The character moments often feel cheesey and over dramatic, as if to make up for the lack of character development.
Marc Thompson does a good job narrating, though I do find some of his character voices to be on the annoying side. The main villain sounds like an angsty teenaged John Malkovich, which became grating over time.
There were moments that I enjoyed. The action, while hard to follow at times, was abundant as you would expect from Star Wars. The interactions between the villains was fun and interesting.
I was hoping for higher quality content from the High Republic era, but maybe it's not for me.

Good, if it doesnt shoot itself in the foot.
A reliance on tropes common to sci-fi drag down the story of this book. If the Nihil and Drengir are destroyed over the course of this series it'll lack the kind of enduring struggle that makes a star wars era an era rather than just a story, and it unfortunately appears to be doing just that.

Decent story, bulky on characters.
Marc Thompson nails another narration. while story was good enough and vocal performance was great; the story frequently bounces between characters making it difficult to really keep track and eventually care. The Nihil are about the only characters who develop in any sort of meaningful way; which is what saved the story for me. You won't regret the book, but you probably won't remember it either.

Scott is a Master of Tragedy! *Spoiler-Free*
Scott packs a punch, fulfilling all of the promises of phase one while simultaneously leaving the reader gutted. The story spends pretty much the entirety of its first act in a more dialogue focused manor, rarely splintering into action. But in those moment we do get action, they are incredibly impactful and horrifying. As a result of his love for the genre of horror, Scott masterfully walks the tightrope of making the reader fear in a Star Wars novel. Perhaps it's thanks to my personal taste but the second act's action focus was slightly less exciting to me but it set up things that allowed the third act to feel like a deserving end to the 15 hour journey. Marc Thompson is amazing as usual, no surprises there. I'm excited to see where this goes!

One author? More like two: ADD and his brother ADHD.
What is there to enjoy? A convoluted plot with no real direction? A cast of characters that’ll leave you saying “who?” 95% of the time someone is mentioned.
This is one of the worst written books I’ve listened to. It is genuinely awful, one proof reading session should’ve resulted in this having massive rewrites to fix whatever this is.
The production quality is all this offers. The sound effects are stellar and the narrator does an excellent job.
The author however needs to take some classes on writing.

Once Again saved by Marc Thompson
Similar to Light of the Jedi the story jumps around and is fragmented, because they (Disney) want you to buy the comics and the JA novels. Its made bearable by Marc Thompson and the production team. Really Thompson should just narrate and do primary character, letting others do unique voices. Go back to Radio shows. The novels are almost there anyway.

Wokism abounds
This is an example of how a company will prioritize inserting a Woke agenda over making a good story. Women are all brilliant, independent and above needing help, the men are weak, easy to manipulate, and foolish. The homosexual agenda is needlessly pushed. This and more makes the story predictable and boring.

If you liked Elzar Mann before, DO NOT READ
This author wrote Elzar to be an emotional, flippant, fickle child. Not only did his storyline cheapen his relationship with Avar, it made him seem shallow and temperamental. I loved Elzar and was rooting for him in the first book, now, I hate when a chapter is about him... this author ruined the series for me.
Additionally, the plot is chaotic with way too many characters. A comic book author has no business writing a novel.

Slow moving story.
The story takes hours to get going and never keeps a decent speed. The narrator is excellent as always. Marc Thompson is the gold standard for starwars. Have enjoyed the new series, so I'm very disappointed in this book. Underwhelming. Try listening at 1.5x speed. Maybe it'll make it easier to stay focused.

The force is not strong with these stories
By keeping the reader in the dark for so much of the story (and especially the ending), I am feeling more and more discouraged by the storyline of the "High Republic".
The ignorance of the Republic and especially these Jedi has grown past frustration and is now into apathy. I really hope changes are made in future books. But honestly, I don't know when I will purchase another "High Republic" property. Or I will wait until I see what others say about future stories and if it improves, I might give it a try. But I am in no hurry.
Kudos to Marc Thompson for giving us a lot more than the author did. Mr. Thompson performed admirably, even Grand Admirably!
