Story
Thrawn’s latest triumph still rests newly on his shoulders. He has led the Chiss to victory and brought glory to the House of Mitth, but the true threat to the Ascendancy has not yet been extinguished. Their foes do not send threats or ultimatums, do not mass ships on the edge of the Chaos. Their weapons come cloaked in smiles and generosity: Gifts offered freely. Services granted unconditionally. Across the Ascendancy, seemingly inconsequential events could herald the doom of the Chiss.

Story
For thousands of years, the Chiss Ascendancy has been an island of calm, a center of power, and a beacon of integrity. It is led by the Nine Ruling Families, whose leadership stands as a bulwark of stability against the Chaos of the Unknown Regions. But that stability has been eroded by a cunning foe who winnows away trust and loyalty in equal measure. Bonds of fidelity have given way to lines of division among the families. Despite the efforts of the Expansionary Defense Fleet, the Ascendancy slips closer and closer to civil war.

“I have sensed a disturbance in the Force.” Ominous words under any circumstances, but all the more so when uttered by Emperor Palpatine. On Batuu, at the edges of the Unknown Regions, a threat to the Empire is taking root - its existence little more than a glimmer, its consequences as yet unknowable. But it is troubling enough to the Imperial leader to warrant investigation by his most powerful agents: ruthless enforcer Lord Darth Vader and brilliant strategist Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Publisher's Summary
New York Times best seller
Discover Thrawn's origins within the Chiss Ascendancy in the first book in an epic new Star Wars trilogy from best-selling author Timothy Zahn.
Beyond the edge of the galaxy lies the Unknown Regions: chaotic, uncharted, and near impassable, with hidden secrets and dangers in equal measure. And nestled within its swirling chaos is the Ascendancy, home to the enigmatic Chiss and the Nine Ruling Families that lead them. The peace of the Ascendancy, a beacon of calm and stability, is shattered after a daring attack on the Chiss capital that leaves no trace of the enemy.
Baffled, the Ascendancy dispatches one of its brightest young military officers to root out the unseen assailants. A recruit born of no title, but adopted into the powerful family of the Mitth and given the name Thrawn. With the might of the Expansionary Fleet at his back, and the aid of his comrade Admiral Ar'alani, answers begin to fall into place. But as Thrawn's first command probes deeper into the vast stretch of space his people call the Chaos, he realizes that the mission he has been given is not what it seems. And the threat to the Ascendancy is only just beginning.

Great book better narrator
I'm always surprised by how good Marc Thompson is at narrating. I've listened to many books done by him and it really adds an extra layer having the characters all sound distinct from one another and how the voice tells something about each character ,not to mention the background noises,to say the book is immersive is an understatement. The story is something you would expect from Zahn interesting, expansive and adds an extra layer to thrawn as a character as you see how he changed his style and grew as a commander I'm very excited for the next book

Great Production, boring story
First, I want to state that I love the Thrawn character. However, this book felt very bland in comparison to the thrawn I grew to love in the Empire series that he was apart of. This book demonstrates more of Thrawn's past, but it felt like the lowlights and not the highlights of his background, if that makes sense. In my opinion, Thrawn as a character, works best with the politics of the Empire, rather than the political drama of the Chiss Ascendancy.

Good book, but too many audio effects
I love the Thrawn books and Marc Thompson is a brilliant voice actor, but overuse of totally unnecessary audio effects make it difficult to listen to this audiobook. The distortion effect used during the dialogue in Chapter 1 is so heavy, I had to go back and listen to it again - twice - because I found it hard to understand the character dialogue. Not the kind of experience listeners enjoy, and if Thrawn wasn’t in my top five favorite Star Wars characters, I would have given up and returned the book.
Hey producers, guess what! Marc Thompson is super talented! Why not let his voice do the work, yes?

Thrawn
I miss the Thrawn of old,but I must admit Zahn is the only person to write a reboot of Thrawn. i don’t like Disney bastardizing my EU but whatever. I do love Thrawn and I’ll take it. I unfortunately must say my Star Wars book library ends with this Thrawn series. I have DAMN near every EU Star Wars book to date. I do not like the direction Disney is taking Star Wars and I am not excited for anything new. I really hate watching Disney ruin my old EU characters and wish they would leave them alone. Actually I wouldn’t mind seeing the original Lucasfilm LTD team and George Lucas finish out the Sword of Jedi series that was just about to start. Hell give us back our EU and let us pick the Star Wars we want.

Zahn does it again!
I've been a Thrawn fan since 1990 when Timothy Zahn introduced this amazing artistic tactician to the Star Wars community. I admit that I was extremely disappointed his original story was all but eradicated when Disney hit the reset switch on the sequel era, but I rejoiced when they brought Thrawn back into the story in the animated series "Star Wars: Rebels" The Thrawn trilogy gave us the tales of Thrawn's meteoric rise through the ranks of the Empire, as well as his first encounter with Anakin Skywalker (Minor Spoiler: That scene is also in this new book, but told from the opposite viewpoint - Continuity: I love it!), and later a mission with Darth Vader. This new story takes us further back into Thrawn's past, giving us a much deeper insight into this genius warrior, including his origins, as well as a greater look at the amazingly complex politics of the Chiss Ascendancy (if you thought it was convoluted on this planet, we're rank amateurs, compared to the Chiss!) All in all, the newer Thrawn novels have given very little to regret the loss of the originals from the Legends timeline, in my opinion. As we still don't know what became of Thrawn after Rebels, I'm quite happy to think that perhaps down the line, with the next books of the "Thrawn Ascendancy" trilogy, we might even get a look at what came next for him. Marc Thompson also delivers a stellar performance, although his little girl voices are a bit less than authentic - but I find that quite understandable. From the moment I began this book, I didn't want to stop it. That said, I hope you enjoy it at least half as much as I did.

Disappointing but not awful
I love the 1990s Thrawn series, and the more recent Thrawn stuff was decent. this one though... it's just starting to diminish. His charachter is not the same! He killed an officer for failing him in the original series. in this series he is getting coloring supplies for children and trying to avoid violence at all cost. not the same guy.

Sadly missed the mark
I had high hopes for this book, it was the first and only book I had ever preordered. The story felt rushed, and went places that left me wondering why, the story also seemed out of sorts, with all the past Thrawn books you get used to Timothy Zahn’s jumping around through time but this ones was to much. It tried to be a cleaver and smart but it felt like it tried to hard.
Marc Thompson is one of my favorite performers, and with this book and all the different species the extreme use of different voices made it hard to listen to. With the adding of young girls into the story as much as Timothy did made for a tuff audio book and made me constantly want to skip sections.
I will add star wars book are my favorite, I own 24 of them. Timothy Zahn is a top author of mine, Marc Thompson is if not one of the best voice actors out there and Thrawn is up with the greatest characters in star wars, it’s just this book was a disappointment and inspired me to write my first full review, which I didn’t want to write because I love Timothy and Marc.

Thrawn, how I have missed you!
It's been a while since I last picked up a Star Wars book...I gave up early in the post-Yuuzhan Vong era, but I read pretty much everything before that. Zahn is without a doubt the shining star of the pre-Disney days, and I'm so excited he's carrying the torch now, too. Thrawn is a fantastic character and the Chiss are a fascinating race. I am so glad I listened to this book.
