Seth's in her training room, outside her classes, and keeps showing up in her bedroom - so not cool. Publisher's Summary
Enter a world of gargoyle protectors, rising demons, and one girl with an explosive secret.
Eighteen-year-old Trinity Marrow may be going blind, but she can see and communicate with ghosts and spirits. Her unique gift is part of a secret so dangerous that she’s been in hiding for years in an isolated compound fiercely guarded by Wardens - gargoyle shape-shifters who protect humankind from demons. If the demons discover the truth about Trinity, they’ll devour her, flesh and bone, to enhance their own powers.
When Wardens from another clan arrive with disturbing reports that something out there is killing both demons and Wardens, Trinity’s safe world implodes. Not the least because one of the outsiders is the most annoying and fascinating person she’s ever met. Zayne has secrets of his own that will upend her world yet again - but working together becomes imperative once demons breach the compound and Trinity’s secret comes to light. To save her family and maybe the world, she’ll have to put her trust in Zayne. But all bets are off as a supernatural war is unleashed....

Shadowhunter vibes, but not Clary Fray (thank god)
Any fans of Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter world will find a lot of familiarities in this one. Like...a lot.
Opinion: you just won’t be constantly frustrated by the uselessness of the heroine *cough* like I was with Clary Fray *cough*
This is some good, steamy, slow burn YA romance and urban fantasy/sci-fi action. It’s funny, charming, and I found it to be unique in its more greyscale stance on the whole Heaven and Hell/Demon and Angel thing, rather than everything being in black and white. Characters exist and act outside of the categories they’re placed in by traditional understandings of good vs. evil. I appreciated that.

I love this book
Jennifer L. Armentrout is in my top 3 favourite authors so it's no wonder I like this book but I can't help it! She knows how to make relatable MCs and swoon-worthy heroes. I liked the MC a lot because she is this all-powerful creature and she KNOWS it but she's also very venerable in a lot of ways which I really enjoyed reading (listening) about.

Excellent story
I was considering buying this for a while but didn’t as I couldn’t get past the whole gargoyle thing, I kept imagining the gargoyles from the 90’s animated series or worse, the ones from Hunchback of Notre Dame (*shudders). That does not a love interest make.
I finally bit the bullet and bought it anyway. Now I’m kicking myself for waiting. The gargoyles or wardens are for the most part in human form, and only turn into wardens when fighting baddies.
There was a good pace for character development and excellent side characters with their own stories and struggles. There’s a decent amount of action as well, good plot twists that I didn’t see coming, and the romance is good too. Kind of an insta-love situation unfortunately but there’s enough complications in the relationship to make me overlook it.
Definitely worth a credit. Now I’m moving on to the sequel. If you’re a fan of Cassandra Clare’s books you probably like this too.

Uninspired
I tried to get into this audiobook, but after 30+ minutes of listening, I just couldn’t take it. It was so boring. The narrator did her best with the material, but it left me uninspired. I’m not normally drawn to so-called “teen” fantasy, but the other reviewers rated it highly so I took a chance. I’m grateful audible permits returns. Good luck, I hope you find it more enjoyable than I did.

I miss the stars
I went legally blind when i was a child, i haven't been able to really see stars in about twenty years, so i really sympathize with the main character. too bad she will more than likely get some deus ex machine thingy that will make it all better in the end. but for now i am totally feeling this character.
As for the story, well i am enjoying it much better than the first trilogy. Speaking of, i kept bursting out laughing every time Leyla was talking. I'm not sure why but the narrator apparently went with phone sex operator and no one told her to stop. it was hilarious. Actually both Roth and Leyla came off as somewhat creepy in this book do to the narration. I kind of liked it, gives a kind of reinterpretation of the characters through another's eye's kind of feel.. Overall the book was pretty great even if it did play into the miscommunication or just refusing to communicate bit a little to hard, Ground breaking for teen novels this story is not. Still i liked it and i liked the protagonists Not an easy feat when it comes to these types of books for me. So i look forward to the next book.
P.S. The "sex" scene was a little confusing sense the author was being somewhat too vague about it, to the point that i wasn't entirely sure what they were doing. Naked dry humping? Lol kind of gross considering it mentioned they both came and there was no mention of cleaning afterwards, they just went to sleep. ew

Wish I returned rather than wasting 14 hours!
After reading the blood and ask books by JLA I was super excited to start a new series by her, and honestly this book fell completely flat. Was going to return it a few times, but just kept hoping it would get better... it did with about 30 minutes left. And even the ending was lame, unexpected, but not in a good way. Don’t plan on listening to any more of this series, but will try some other books by JLA.
I found the narration okay, she had really long pauses between sentences, making the book drag on, and did not enjoy her male voices, they all kind of just sounded rude and snarky.

Supernatural Vibe - Excellent Listen!
What an amazing listen! The narrator did a wonderful job!
Really love the characters in this book Zayne (from The Dark Elements series) is one of my favorite characters! If you haven’t read The Dark Elements series first, I would recommend you do so before listening to this book. Trinity is a super witty and fun character. There are a lot of twists in this one. Especially towards the end of the book. If you like paranormal romance and the show Supernatural, you should definitely give this book a try!

Continuation of Zayne/Layla/Roth's Story
I'd previously enjoyed the story of these three characters (Zayne/Layla/Roth) and was delighted to have them smoothly fold into this one. This story added another strong female to their group without a sense of it being forced. As a separate story, Trinity's character was well developed in her own right. That allowed for a distancing from & developing perspective regarding Zayne & Layla's deep & complex relationship. In this way, the new emotional connection between Zayne & Trinity was allowed to emerge organically and without a sense of anyone's established arch being betrayed. I look forward to hopefully seeing their stories now merge completely and carry forward together from here to save us all.

I Didn’t Love It Like I Anticipated :(
I’m not sure if it was the narrator, but this story fell way short for me. Her narration ruined what was meant to be funny dialogue and slang comments. Instead the dialogue came off as dull and cringy. And what the heck did she do to Layla and Roth? Her narration ruined my favorite characters. They’re supposed to be cute and funny, not selfishly creepy. Ugh :( I could go on and on.
I love Jennifer Armentrout’s creative mind and incredible author’s prowess, however this book just lagged. Once it was over, I felt relief with no desire to continue. It was lacking that special spark that I felt in her previous books.
I don’t know... maybe it’s the narration, but the story just didn’t light that special flame for me. I’m deeply saddened since I was really looking forward to loving it. Oh well. You win some and you lose some.

Amended; Ok I actually loved this
At first, I couldn't get through this book.
The protagonist came off as whiney and cliche and nothing felt new or really grabbed me.
Then, because I was in a book hole, I kept listening. And I have to say I'm really quite glad that I did. Something I appreciate that this author accomplished extremely well, was illustrating what consent actually is. An enthusiastic, freely given, continuous agreement. I think that having a fantasy novel demonstrate this is so important. Often 'romance' is written as kind of rapey culture, so I actually have to says hats off to the chef for so poignantly and accurately putting what consent looks like into practice.
*************************************SPOILERS AHEAD*************************************
I kept listening because I had nothing else, but by the time I got to the end, I was listening non-stop. The protagonist goes through a real journey and the other character development is spot on. I will even say the plot thickened nicely, and I did not see it coming. On that note, I did not see it coming. And part of me feels like this is (if you haven't seen the Disney movie Frozen, the following contains spoilers) was pulled a Hanz and the villain kind of comes out of nowhere, almost to the point of being unbelievable.
I will say the romance is as described, slow burning and delicious. For the protagonist, I kind of wish she had more going for her. I like that she has a disability, I like that she's not white. And I appreciate that she grows a lot along her journey. But there was something missing. I'm not sure what. She was badass. But I guess it was hard that she was so desperate to be loved ... I mean, I understand its a major thrust of the plot. But I always appreciate a strong female protagonist who doesn't need a man. I guess maybe that's reductionist of me, and it isn't unfeminist to want to find love. I think it just made me a bit squeamish because the thought of finding one's life partner at 18 seems too young. But in either case, glad I stuck it out.

This was such a wild, amazing ride and a great listen. My emotions are all over the place but I just have to let them lose in writing because I can’t contain my excitement over this book. This world is beyond unique and it was so good to be back. The narration was so spot-on and I enjoyed this audio version of the book so much.
I have to confess I wasn’t #TeamZayne when reading The Dark Elements series, but boy, the tables have turned now. He’s moved to the top of my BBFs list. Zayne was this intimidating and a bit moody Warden dealing with his own issues from the past. But he was so kind and loving, just the way I remembered him from before. Trinity was such a sweetheart and even though she had all these powers and intriguing qualities surrounding her character, she was going through some very human emotions and insecurities. I loved her instantly.
The banter between them was hilarious and sexy at the same time. I might have giggled like a schoolgirl with their exchanges. It was a slow-burning romance, gradually built, but so so beautifully written. I read and reread some parts over and over to savor each word. There were also some seriously steamy scenes and the chemistry was off the charts hot. But there were also intense battles and nail-biting moments that I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to see what happens. Crazy action, danger lurking at every corner and a strong female lead that I fell head over heels in love with. That’s what you’re getting into with this book.
It was obvious this story was so personal for Jen. You could feel it in every word and every reference to this disease she is dealing with herself. I’m more in awe with her as a writer after reading this book. It requires a lot of strength and courage to do what she does having her condition. And I admire her even more for that now. The emotions were front and center in this book but combined with all the fast-paced battles, lovable characters, poignant backstories, touching romance and intriguing plot and this story turned into the perfect package. Add to that some very clear messages with life truths inside that made me think and really appreciate the little things we take for granted. And you got yourself an unforgettable experience. Besides, the narration transferred all the emotions from the story and then some. Great job in this department. The book-hangover is guaranteed because this would surely be your next favorite book. Consider yourself warned.

I LOVED IT!
It’s been a very long time since I enjoyed a book this much! The pilot was great and the writing was hilarious and so clever! There were times when I was laughing out loud and other moments when I was crying. It is so well written and the narration was awesome and really added a lot to the story! Overall one of my top ten books ever!

🌻I hope there is more to their story!🌻

I enjoyed this book, even it was more PG than I usually prefer. There are no true sex scenes, just a couple of make out sessions with some grinding
Action. There is also some violence, but it’s not very
Graphic. I definitely wouldn’t have any problem with one of my four girls listening to it, when they were teenagers.
I enjoyed the storyline and the character development. There were a few emotional scenes, and yes, I shed a tear or three.
I am assuming that the general plot will continue, as the series progresses but, book one was a complete novel that also set up the plot in the next book. There was an important question about the possible future of the type of relationship the Hero and Heroine could have, that was left unclear. I sure hope that question is addressed in book two.
Lauren Fortgate was a new narrator, for me, and she will be added to my favorites list because she did a fabulous job.
Even though this book was more YA than I usually enjoy, I’m anxious to continue with book two. I definitely feel like it was a credit worthy listen!
