Story
Maddison James learned a lot about life last year. Only important stuff, of course. Like how to breathe under water, how to turn an arrow into a weapon, and how to fall in love. Asher Locke. The one who stole her heart. The one who showed her the truth of her past and...hopefully her future. Now, it's just time for them to live happily ever after. Only the gods have different plans. And with Atlantis rising, Maddi isn't sure she'll survive long enough to even finish her second year, let alone have any sort of future.

They rule my new town, my school, and with more money than God, there’s very little out of their reach. Four gorgeous, perfect, scary boys. There used to be five, but one of them died, leaving a fifth position that I now fill. I didn't ask for this. I didn't want to be part of this billionaire-boys-club. But no one cares about what I want. Sebastian Beckett is the worst of them. Their leader. He draws me in, and strips me of every defense I have. Unfortunately, Staviti has other plans, plans that threaten to change the natural order of the worlds—though nobody really understands why. His agenda may very well affect all beings on Minatsol, even those that thought themselves safe in Topia. Even Willa-invincible-Knight. Unsure with her new place in the worlds, Willa must follow the Abcurses to their new post: Champions Peak, a secluded mountain far from civilization, where the most powerful sols have been summoned to hone their abilities through direct contact with the gods. There is a chance that she might survive her time on the mountain, but it seems like staying alive amidst the powerful occupants of the Peak is the least of her concerns. Her real problem is staying on the mountain at all.

Four dangerous, damaged, messed-up boys. There used to be five, but one of them died, and I’m starting to suspect he was murdered. I didn't ask for this. No one would ask to be played, manipulated, seduced, and betrayed. But that’s what happened, anyway. It wasn’t enough for them to break me. Sebastian Beckett has decided that he can’t let me go, but I refuse to forgive and forget his betrayal so easily. His fixation is bordering on obsession, but when we begin to suspect a spy within Delta, there’s no time to deal with his feelings.

Story
Sometimes history lies, and the tales of Minatsol and Topia are no different. Since the birth of Topia, Staviti has woven a web of deceit around the truth of creation, striving only to maintain his power while destroying anything that gets in his way. Now, Willa and the Abcurses are determined to strip back the layers, to uncover the truth, and to understand the true nature of the two worlds before it's too late. The only problem? Any wrong step in their quest to restore balance might have terrible repercussions. Every single being - living or dead - might have to pay the price.

We have no idea what we’re doing, but somehow, we are determined to stop them. Permanently. We just need leverage...irrefutable evidence of their corruption. And we need it now. I thought I was ordinary Rory Franco: college student, artist, and over-protected daughter. It turns out I’m Persephone Bloodstone, the long lost heir to one of the five royal families of dark magic. - By Mel on 2020-07-26
Publisher's Summary
Maddison James is about to discover some truths about the world.
Firstly...supernaturals exist.
WTF?
Secondly...she is one, even though no one seems to know exactly what kind.
Double WTF.
Thirdly...she’s about to go back to school.
Well, things just got a little more interesting.
The Supernatural Academy is where shifters, vampires, magic users, and fey are educated. Where they are taught about their abilities, and how to function in the human world. Maddison already has the human part down, but this supernatural thing is an entirely new dangerous game.
Example one: mean girls who can actually turn you into a frog.
Example two: Asher Lock, a god at the Academy. Not literally...well, who knows for sure. He certainly acts the part, as do all of his minions who worship him.
Asher drives her crazy, because apparently snarly, gorgeous, and arrogant is her thing, and despite their mutual dislike, sparks fly between them. The more they’re thrown together, the more Asher is determined to figure out what’s been blocking her abilities.
Until the moment the truth is revealed, and they find out nothing in this supernatural world is what they thought.
Including each other.

Disappointed
I've listened to some of Jaymin Eve's collaborative books, which are great light entertainment, but within the first hour of listening to this solo venture I could tell there was a severe lack of editing or development. Many, many sentences are illogical or over-explained. For example, the main character is kidnapped in the first scene of the book. When she meets the person that orchestrated it, her reaction is basically, "I guess, in a way, I'm grateful to have my boring life spiced up by this, and I'm not really angry. "
..... Um, what? In no way does that make any sense, and it feels like the author is trying to force the audience to get over an ethical problem because she doesn't want to take the time to actually develop or re-work a plot point.
The author also uses blatant plot devices to explain way, way too much without any action in the first 20 minutes. Those details work better if they are slipped in sparingly. Instead, the imaginary rules are word-vomited out by the captor in a forced and cliché way.
This author does really well when she works with others, so this solo work makes me think she doesn't have the critical early readers that she needs yet. They may piss writers off with their feedback sometimes, but they're soooo valuable. Cannot restate it enough.
Personally, this book is DNF for me.

So disappointed. Love the story, hate the narrator.
I thought I liked the narrator at first! I really did. But after a few chapters, I slowly started to HATE her style of narration. She raises her voice higher in EVERY sentence at the beginning before lowering it slowly over the course of the sentence. So basically, every sentence she says begins with a high pitch and ends with a low pitch. Imagine hearing someone speak that way for EVERY sentence for HOURS on end! I just couldn’t take it anymore after a while. And that’s super disappointing! I really wanted to force myself to deal with it because the story is great. I love supernatural stories like this one! So kudos to the author, but I’m sorry you got stuck with a bad narrator. I usually hate leaving negative reviews, but maybe the narrator will take this information into consideration for her next book and maybe she’ll try to be less “uniform”. Also, one of the male voices she did was just painfully bad. I’m not sure what she was trying to accomplish but it was like she was trying to make his voice sound low and instead, she made it sound like someone doing an impression of a monster voice for a child’s bedtime story.

Good story, but not a Great story
This was an easy listen and I enjoyed the book, but nothing captivated me. Haven't decided if I will read the next book yet or not.
Overall: 3
Fantasy: 5. The book hits the fantasy mark being based in a school for the supernatural.
Romance: 1. I found the romance lacking, I kept finding myself getting excited for potential moments that could happen... and then nothing. There is one sex scene that kinda felt random, and lots of sex talk. I had trouble really getting into the main character couple, it was developed enough for me to really get into. I really wanted her to have more attention with the other male characters, maybe in the next couple of books that will be built out more.
Humor: 2 There are some funny moments and comments in dialogue.
Narrator:3. I enjoyed the female character, but the main male character ASH I could not stand. He sounded like an old professor rather than the sexiest man alive. This was another reason I had trouble believing the romance.
Action: 2. Not a ton of action or suspense. There were 2 or 3 events that occur, but they are not build out enough to feel like "action'.

Good start to a series...minus the porn
I most enjoyed this book thanks to the sassy main character who has a great sense of humor and doesn't take any crap from anyone. There are some good characters and some not so well fleshed out yet. Overall it was a good story with enjoyable enough development to make me want to continue on with the story. The only problem I had was when all of a sudden it went from fantasy novel to full on porn level romance novel at the end of the book. I'm not a prude, but having that come out of nowhere just made me go, huh? Why I am I suddenly getting all of this? Do I need it? No. Do I want it? Not really. I'm not a romance novel kinda person nor do I need explicit listings of everything someone is doing to someone to make them hot. Beyond that, I liked the book. I just hope it doesn't continue being a romance/fantasy type series.
