Publisher's Summary

LAPD Detective Harry Bosch seeks justice for the forgotten in this original story from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly

An anonymous tip puts Bosch on a case that has remained unsolved for decades, the vicious stabbing of a teenage boy whose body was found in an abandoned Old Hollywood restaurant.

Cold cases are often the toughest: With no body, no murder scene, and no fingerprints, Bosch nevertheless gets lucky when DNA evidence from the murder weapon points to a known killer. But the DA insists that science alone is not enough - he needs the case to be bulletproof before he'll take it to court.

Determined to speak for those who can no longer speak for themselves, Bosch has one chance to wrench a confession out of a cold-blooded killer, or risk letting him walk free for good.

In this gripping, never-before-published story by "master of the crime thriller" (Huffington Post ) Michael Connelly, Detective Harry Bosch quenches his thirst for justice and shows why he is "one of the most popular and enduring figures in American crime fiction" (Chicago Tribune).

To short

The story was to short and predicable. The narrator was good I guessed at the beginning of the story what was going to happen and I was right.

Good for a short Short Story by a Favorite Author

If you have someplace to go and need only a 45 minute listen, I would suggest that this audio-book is priced to buy, but not to use a credit. I listened during my commute this morning and found it well performed but not a full investigation by Harry Bosch. There is not much to figure out, it is just a good listen of how Harry solves the problem of getting a guilty criminal prosecuted on a 20+ year cold case when only DNA is available. Interesting, but forgettable.

If you are new to Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch, he is a wonderful detective character. I recommend reading the books in order.

First worthless Harry Bosch story

Any additional comments?

This is the first Harry Bosch story I thought was worthless. An anonymous tip breaks open a cold-case involving a couple of murders involving a switchblade used on gay men. No real twists or investigatory hurdles, just a straight line from A to B. Bechdel test: Fail. You know, it makes me realize that I didn't care for the last two Bosch books, "The Drop" and "The Black Box." The new Mickey Haller book — "The Gods of Guilt" — was great, among his best, so maybe Harry's character has run his course. Connelly keeps threatening to have a case featuring Bosch's daughter, maybe it's time. (That said, the two Bosch short story collections — "Angle of Investigation" and "Suicide Run" — were very good.)

Very short Bosch cold case story

I missed finding this Michael Connelly short story when it was published almost 3 years ago.The story shows once again the crime solving strength of Harry Bosh late in his LAPD career. Totally worthwhile!

It's a short story!

I've read or listened to all things Bosch, so I didn't want to miss this snippet. It's straightforward and probably based on a true event when Connolly was a reporter.

Len Cariou is the narrator, as he is for most of the series. Connolly is one of my favorite authors, so I have to say this narrator reads this series more like a documentary. He does a horrible job with women, something many guys with deep voices seem to have little problems doing.

Nevertheless it's always good to hear from Harry Bosch.

A Harry Bosch short story

This is a short story about LAPD detective Harry Bosch who is assigned a cold case after an anonymous tip names the murderer. The case is of the vicious stabbing of a teenage boy whose body was found in the abandoned “Brown Derby”, a famous Hollywood restaurant that was destroyed during the Riots. Bosch finds DNA evidence of the victim and the a convicted killer who is already in Prison for a similar crime but the ADA wants more evidence so Bosch continues his search for evidence. The story is a bit too short. Len Cariou does a good job narrating the short story.

Bare Bones

What disappointed you about Switchblade?

When I purchased this I did not realize it was just a short story. My bad, need to pay attention. But it is really a bare bones story and does not satisfy. It certainly does not compare to other Connelly tales involving Harry Bosch.

Has Switchblade turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, but I'll be more careful when buying audiobooks in the future, making sure they are full length novels.

Disappointed

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Though I was getting a book ... but this is only a short story. Should have been more careful in reading the offering.

Cheap shot

The author's style is only faintly detectable in this thrown-together hash of a story. It is not written in short story form. In it's entirety, it would have to stretch to make a sketchy first chapter in the Bosch books of the past. I admit to not checking this pre-order for length - or even for price, for that matter. Still, I doubt whether I'm the only customer to feel cheated.

Wasted time and money.

I don't know why I chose a short story. I will not do that again.

short story

Would you try another book from Michael Connelly and/or Len Cariou?

yes

If you’ve listened to books by Michael Connelly before, how does this one compare?

Before you buy this one, be aware it is only 50 minutes along. Generally a good Michael Connelly story, but it's a short story.
