Publisher's Summary

New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts weaves scandal, celebrity secrets, and murder into an explosive novel of Hollywood almost too wicked not to be true: the story of a legendary actress who knows too much - and the woman she’s chosen to reveal it all....

Eve Benedict is the kind of subject who could make any biographer’s career. Last of the movie goddesses, she has two Oscars, four ex-husbands, and a legion of lovers, both famous and infamous. Now she is ready to write a tell-all memoir that has even Hollywood’s richest and most powerful worried.

Julia Summers never dreamed of being chosen to tell Eve’s story. But even if it means transplanting herself and her ten-year-old son from their quiet life in Connecticut to the withering limelight of Beverly Hills, it’s an opportunity too great to pass up. But Julia never imagined how far someone would go to keep Eve Benedict’s book from being published...until she discovers just how dark Eve’s secrets are. And the one man Julia hopes she can trust - Eve’s stepson, Paul Winthrop - may have the most to gain if his stepmother’s story is never told...and if Julia’s life ends before she can write a word of the truth.

“Roberts does a beautiful job weaving together the movie star’s titillating tales and the love story that develops.” - USA Today

So far not so good

I'm on chapter 13 and there are 33 chapters and I can't wait for it to end. I want to uncover the suspense and the old lady is interesting. But the romantic leads are unappealing and the equation masojinistic and yuck. Hero's forceful advances are galling in this consent-sensitive age. I had bought it hoping that the story might take me in like some of Nora Roberts' good ones like Angel's Fall, Chasing Fire, etc. This, I will likely return, dunno if will finish it.

Found it long and was struggling to finish. I ended up skipping to the last chapter to finish

Norah Roberts is one of my favourite authors. Once again, she never let me down.

Slow moving, Out-dated, Not a great payout.

First thing to know is though the release date is 11/14, the actual book was written in 1991. Everyone smokes, people are going to be on the Carson show, they record things on cassettes and VCRs. I'm of an age it doesn't matter that much.

The second thing is the book is nineteen hours long, and it's not for plot twists - it's a need for editing. The entire first installment (9 hours) is back story, consisting mostly of Hollywood gossip and scandal. While the gossip is about fictional celebrities, there is a lot of discussion of actual films and celebrities of the Brando/Turner/Davis "golden age."

Regarding the narrator - I don't know how much of the plodding of the first half is about her pacing, or whether she suffered from the content she had to read, but it is bothersome that all the male characters sound exactly the same, even when it's mentioned one has a British accent.

It was pretty late in the book that I guessed the killer, but considering the murder didn't happen until the tenth hour of listening, I'm not sure that's saying much..

That said, it wasn't horrible or annoying, but it's not one I'm planning to listen to again and again. I have to give it a resounding, "Meh."

"Foui, vulgar, unnecessary language"

If you love books with foul vulgar language, this is it!! Evidently Roberts loves the f word, using it as part of each character's language. Does
she use these vulgar
terms in her own every day language? With her children? I would be offended if those words were used in a conversation with her!! What about public speaking? Did the classic novel writers use such languag? yet we listenes/readers knew the characters feelings, I know II'm naive and such language is commonplace..Sadly our society has accepted it.. Is there

Kept me completely entertained

This was a great older book of NR. The characters are interesting and the story develops in a very engaging way. Enjoy!

Good

What did you love best about Genuine Lies?

Overall it was a excellent read. The story, chacters and narrator was good.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes! Usually I can figure out the "who" but it wasn't until the last several chapters did I focus on the person.

What does Joyce Bean bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I wouldn't have attempted a 20 hour book from an unknown. Joyce Bean is one of my favorite narrators.

Slow to begin, but worth going to the end

Good listen, at first I wasn't paying good attention, didn't think I was going to like Eve or Paul. But as he story line developed, I did. I started listening more carefully or rewinding to get the details. Enjoyed the VCR references or the phone booth/fax machine-revealing the period this book was actually written
