Tunuva Melim is a sister of the Priory. For fifty years, she has trained to slay wyrms – but none have appeared since the Nameless One, and the younger generation is starting to question the Priory's purpose. To the north, in the Queendom of Inys, Sabran the Ambitious has married the new King of Hróth, narrowly saving both realms from ruin. Their daughter, Glorian, trails in their shadow – exactly where she wants to be. The dragons of the East have slept for centuries. Dumai has spent her life in a Seiikinese mountain temple, trying to wake the gods from their long slumber.

Story
Kell is one of the last Travelers - magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes. As such, he can choose where he lands. There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there's Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. There's White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. And once upon a time, there was Black London...but no one speaks of that now.

Story
The drought - or the Tap-Out, as everyone calls it - has been going on for a while now. Everyone’s lives have become an endless list of don’ts: don’t water the lawn, don’t fill up your pool, don’t take long showers. Until the taps run dry. Suddenly, Alyssa’s quiet suburban street spirals into a warzone of desperation; neighbors and families turned against each other on the hunt for water. And when her parents don’t return and her life - and the life of her brother - is threatened, Alyssa has to make impossible choices if she’s going to survive.

1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

Just...wow.
One of the best stories of the recent years with mild humour and savage, heart-wrenching themes, performed by a masterful narrator. I can't recommend this enough.

Recommended to Me and I'm Happy!
This was good and really interesting - I thought the world was cool and I want to see where it evolves to - but I also was kinda bored during some of it. I thought the dual perspective didn't work until they were separated and that there could have been more in general that was discussed. But I am looking forward to seeing where the next book goes!
I didn't really know much about this going into it beyond the fact that Joey from Thoughts and Afterthoughts loved it. And he doesn't love anything. So when it was on sale during the Audible Canada Day sale, I picked it up. And I was genuinely surprised.
I liked that this makes you think about death, life, and everything in between. I like the idea of existence beyond living and the role that plays in how we interact with one another. I also liked the way that murder was discussed in this and how people were reaped. Also, math was a part of this and I didn't hate it????
I had some issues with it, especially around the training received by the characters and how this one ended. I thought that for the beginning of the series, there was just too much of a conclusion to this one. So I am excited to see where this goes, but I am a little disappointed in how it ended.
Overall, if you haven't heard of this, like dystopian novels, and want something new, this is the book for you. Watch for me to read the sequel, THUNDERHEAD!

Drew me in and kept me hooked
I was drawn in from the first page and couldn’t stop listening. Am going to order the next in the series. The violence could be an issue for some readers. The narrator was good in my opinion, although I agree with another reviewer regarding the depiction of the females, but it didn’t bother me that much.

Dark, Gripping, and Philosophical
It was dark but still hopeful, philosophical but not overwhelmingly so, it created a full universe but one that you could still understand. Once I started I couldn't stop listening
