Story
A bomb explodes on a sunset charter cruise out of Friday Harbor at the height of tourist season and kills everyone on board. Now this fishing and boating community is in shock and asking who would commit such a heinous crime—the largest act of mass murder in the history of the San Juan Islands. Accused of putting profits before people after leaking fuel that caused a massive fish kill, the West End Charter company may itself have been the target.

Publisher's Summary
The unsolved murder of a young activist leads to the discovery of much darker crimes in New York Times best-selling author Allison Brennan’s latest compelling thriller to feature the young, edgy detective Kara Quinn and the loner FBI agent Matt Costa. This time they work to uncover possible ties to a high-stakes cartel in the Southwest desert.
Something mysterious is killing the wildlife in the mountains just south of Tucson. When a college intern turned activist sets out to collect her own evidence, she, too, ends up dead. Local law enforcement is slow to get involved. That’s when the mobile FBI unit goes undercover to infiltrate the town and its copper refinery in search of possible leads.
Quinn and Costa find themselves scouring the desolate landscape, which keeps revealing clues to something much darker - greed, child trafficking and more death. As the body count adds up, it’s clear they have stumbled onto much more than they bargained for. Now they must figure out who is at the heart of this mayhem and stop them before more innocent lives are lost.

4 star
it is a good story, but there are A LOT of characters. This may not bother some people, but it does me, I really had to concentrate on all the names, and who they were. The narator although clear, didn't really know how to do any kind of variances in even the main characters voices which also made it difficult to follow. But I did finish it, and if there is another follow up I might look at it. But I honestly prefer a story that revolves around a handful or less of people. Not so many I can't keep it all straight.

Repetitive storyline.
Brennan needs to find new storylines as her books are all starting to sound the same.
Reader was very limited in her ability to change of voice for the various characters.

Good story. Performance could be better.
Loved the story. The narrator was a little stiff and enunciated a little too hard most of the time and it distracted from the story. Otherwise liked it a lot.

Entertaining
My only gripes with this novel are the narrator—who isn’t the worst, but feels very rushed and a teensy bit monotone in her reading—and the editor. A few more rounds of editing with a professional would have really made the writing a bit cleaner. Other than that I enjoyed this novel. The characters are solid and really give an individual feel. These novels aren’t 13 a dozen, so to speak. The story was decent too. Definitely entertaining

Hard to follow
There are a lot of characters and the narrator doesn't vary the voices enough to distinguish between characters. It's hard to follow. Didn't finish.
