About this listen
They say every cloud has a silver lining....
When Freya Miller is struck by tragedy, losing her husband and her home within a short time, she is burdened with many worries. The main one being where she and her five-year old daughter, Skye, are going to live. A chance meeting with the charismatic Dr Marsden changes all that. He offers the young mother the most amazing opportunity: an apartment at one of London’s most exclusive addresses for a fraction of the market rental cost. It’s an offer Freya simply can’t refuse. Within a couple of weeks, Freya and Skye are moving into Adder House and meeting the other welcoming residents. They very quickly feel part of the family.
But just when Freya truly believes all her problems are history, a series of strange, unexplained occurrences begin. It leaves Freya with the unshakeable feeling that even when their apartment door is securely locked, she and her daughter are not alone. Freya thought she’d left all her troubles behind her, yet she soon realises there are problems here that are far more terrifying than before.
For behind the doors of Adder House, everything is most definitely not as it seems.
Old secrets refuse to stay buried, and someone is determined to keep a terrible past very much alive.

Not bad
Not one of my favorite KL Slater stories but not terrible. The narration is great and the story is adequate. It was a fairly decent freebie.

Not one of my favorite KL Slater titles
The narrator was good and overall, not a bad story, but it wasn't one of my favorite KL Slater stories.

Great thrilling Book
What an amazingly unusual story. Had me wondering all the way through.
Very well narrated and of course K.L Slater never disappoints. Her twists and turns are phenomenal.
A truly lovely listen no regrets in buying this book. Another winner.

Great for a free book!!
This was an entertaining listen and it was fun to listen to while driving or on my walks. The storyline was a bit predictable but I still enjoyed it. I am so glad I found this author and plan on downloading her other books as well. And they’re free! A great option while you’re waiting for your new credit

Capable 'Psychological Suspense'
K.L. Slater does a nice job building tension in this story about a widowed mother of a strikingly realistic 5-year-old who moves into a new "too-good-to-be-true" apartment with a hidden history and sketchy neighbors. On top of that modern-day scenario, a remote series of events involving psychological experiments on children is introduced that piques interest and contributes to a "What Is Going On Here?" sense of discomfort. Also in the book's favor, Slater's characters are interesting; protagonist 'Freya' speaks with a convincing inner dialogue; and the vocabulary, prose, and description are creditable. The book is quite readable.
Less fortunately, the pacing is a little bit off and the plot resolution is laughably implausible & unsatisfying.. this isn't Slater's best work.
The narration by Tuppence Middleton is similarly praiseworthy but unspectacular (John Chancer only reads some clinical notes excerpts from the remote past). Middleton's diction, cadence, and tone are great.. but her overall whispery timbre is frequently interrupted with shrill voice-acting for the child, 'Skye'. The overall above-average performance is tempered with the fact that you really need to avoid earbuds with this one.
Don't get me wrong - Audible Studios does a commendable job with volume control (the recording is more than acceptable) - but I have heard better sound editing.
Altogether, 'The Apartment' rates 6.5 stars out of 10. It jumps from modern to apparently unrelated past timelines for completely unknown reasons (until the climax) - so you need to listen fairly carefully - but if you can manage it, the book is entertaining. It's a reasonable download for diehard Domestic Thriller fans or if you can get it as a 'Plus' selection.. but other options beckon if they ask for a Credit.

Another excellent thriller
I’ve listened to several of K.L Slaters books and have found most of them to be quite a good “read “. Not too scary as to keep me awake at night but still quite enthralling.
