Publisher's Summary

They say every cloud has a silver lining....

When Freya Miller is struck by tragedy, losing her husband and her home within a short time, she is burdened with many worries. The main one being where she and her five-year old daughter, Skye, are going to live. A chance meeting with the charismatic Dr Marsden changes all that. He offers the young mother the most amazing opportunity: an apartment at one of London’s most exclusive addresses for a fraction of the market rental cost. It’s an offer Freya simply can’t refuse. Within a couple of weeks, Freya and Skye are moving into Adder House and meeting the other welcoming residents. They very quickly feel part of the family.

But just when Freya truly believes all her problems are history, a series of strange, unexplained occurrences begin. It leaves Freya with the unshakeable feeling that even when their apartment door is securely locked, she and her daughter are not alone. Freya thought she’d left all her troubles behind her, yet she soon realises there are problems here that are far more terrifying than before.

For behind the doors of Adder House, everything is most definitely not as it seems.

Old secrets refuse to stay buried, and someone is determined to keep a terrible past very much alive.

bookgirl

Silly, unbelievable story. The voice of little girl sounds like a wicked witch. Don't waste your credits on this one.

Do not recommend

This was a slow and predictable story, the narrator was so monotone it was hard to pay attention. The voice of the little girl sounded like a crotchety little old lady. Very disappointing.

Fairly Disappointing

I had the new K.L Slater on pre-order and I couldn't wait to pop it in for my commute. It started out with promise, but sort of unraveled at the half point- and unfortunately it was all downhill from there. I do so love her writing style, but this book had no particularly 'stunning' revelation and was just sort of, well.. boring.

I will continue to read her books, but I can't say this was my favourite.

This is a very disturbing story

I can’t finish it. As a psych major in my youth and one who loves children - this is a horrible and believable tale.

Not a good book for audio

Couldn’t keep my interest and main character was boring and not very smart to not realize there was a trick to the whole thing. Couldn’t even finish it.

Very lightweight little psychological thriller!

I'm accustomed to paying $3.99 for Ms. Slater's Kindle ebooks and getting the Audible version for $1.99. The Apartment costs a full Audible credit. It's not close to being worth it. I've listened to several of Slater's audio books and Liar is the only one worthwhile. Lucy Price-Lewis narrates the other Slater audio books and she does a better job than Tuppence Middleton. I do not understand Audible's huge sales push for this mediocre novel.

Great “Gaslight” with a Twist!

This was my first K.L. Slater book. It had wonderful suspense. It truly reminded me of the classic movie Gaslight, but with a twist. I certainly didn’t guess whodunnit. I’ll definitely be reading/listening to another! I feel a psychological thriller/suspense binge coming on. I truly loved Tuppence Middleton’s narration, with the exception of little Skye’s voice. She did so well with the rest, I hesitate to criticize. Yet, Skye sounded more like an evil old lady than a young girl. I even got a second and a third opinion in my household. My husband said he didn’t know about evil, but definitely old. My son said “old witch.” That’s probably the best description. She did such an amazing job otherwise, I eventually didn’t even notice quite as much. It’s beyond me how any of the narrators keep the voices straight when switching back and forth. I often wondered if they read each voice separately and they were then all put together. Yet, there’s a wonderful video of her recording the book, and she read right through it, switching voices before my eyes. I’d certainly recommend this one!

BRAVO! What a great listen!

So glad I chose this title and I think the narrator did an excellent job with so many characters to speak for! Towards the end there was a twist I did not expect. Well, I expected it but did not want to believe it could happen!

Solid story

Man do I love the British accents. I could listen to this narrator all day long!! The story was solid but I think I worked it up so much in my head that I was just dying for it!

Great book!!

This book was great! So very glad I preordered it! Highly recommended! The last 1/3 of the book, i was seriously on the edge of my seat. It was non stop action. I never could have guessed what was going on. NEVER!

Narrator: Tuppence Middleton did a really good job. The ONLY thing, the voice of the child was like fingernails on a chalkboard. But the rest of her awesome performance made up for it!
