Publisher's Summary

An LAPD homicide detective must choose between justice and vengeance as he teams up with the FBI in the first novel of the "thrilling" Harry Bosch series (New York Times Book Review).

For maverick LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal...because the murdered man was a fellow Vietnam "tunnel rat" who had fought side by side with him in a hellish underground war. Now Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam. From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit. Pitted against enemies inside his own department and forced to make the agonizing choice between justice and vengeance, Bosch goes on the hunt for a killer whose true face will shock him.

Enjoyed, but….

I enjoyed the book, but found that the culprit was easy to predict 3/4 of the way through the book.

Love Michael Connelly’s books!

Great narrator, suits Harry Bosch’s character as I see him. Wonderful storyline. Didn’t expect that twisted ending. Getting the next Harry Bosch novel, which means high recommended.

Awesome first book

Having missed the original release of this book, I decided to start at the beginning of the H. Bosch series after watching the adaptation of same on Prime.

Michael Connelly does a superb job in developing the character of this scrupulous but misunderstood detective and supporting characters. This story sets a great foundation for the future books in the series which I will read/listen to.

The narration by Dick Hill is flawless. His consistency in voice characterizations is excellent.

This book is an oldie but a goodie.

Nice to meet you, Harry Bosch

Re-read of the first Harry Bosch book, because I want to finish the (very long) series, eventually, and it has been a while since I started it. This was an audiobook and I really liked it. Harry is a hard-boiled detective who has a strong sense of right and wrong, yet pushes his authoritative boundaries as far as they can go in order to achieve justice. In this novel, a dead body in a pipe is an ex-Vietnam colleague of Harry's who seems to have gotten caught up in a bad situation. Rich character-building and excellent plot development make this a thrilling ride. The narration was really good. This book was written in the late '80s/ early '90s so I took in Harry's character with a grain of salt.
