Publisher's Summary

"A book begging to be read on the beach, with the sun warming the sand and salt in the air: pure escapism."—Kirkus

From number one New York Times best-selling author Susan Mallery—a story of friends who become family, giving each other courage to start over....

When fate brings three strangers to a charming space for lease on the California coast, the Boardwalk Bookshop is born. Part bookstore, part gift shop, part bakery, it's a dream come true for Bree, Mikki, and Ashley. But while their business is thriving, their personal lives are...not.

Bree, wounded by brilliant but cold parents and her late husband's ultimate betrayal, has sworn to protect her heart at all costs. Even from Ashley's brother, a writer and adventurer who has inspired millions. He's the first man to see past Bree's barricades to her true self, which terrifies her. Mikki has this divorce thing all figured out—somehow, she's stayed friends with her ex and her in-laws...until a new man changes how everyone looks at her, and how she sees herself. Meanwhile, Ashley discovers that the love of her life never intends to marry. Can she live without being a wife if it means she can have everything else she's ever wanted?

At sunset every Friday on the beach in front of the Boardwalk Bookshop, the three friends share a champagne toast. As their bond grows closer, they challenge one another to become the best versions of themselves in this heartachingly beautiful story of friendship, sisterhood, and the transformative power of love.

Don't wait for it to get better...it doesn't.

For the first few chapters I was debating whether or not the narrator was computer generated.

The women in this story set feminism back at least 20 years.

Did grade 8 me write this book?

This was possibly the worst book I’ve ever read. I finished it as it was for a book club but it seriously read like a grade 8 girls’ fantasy about how relationships ships work. It was uncomfortable in some parts. Do not waste your time on this garbage.

Slow start and robotic narration are why I abandoned this book

I usually like these type of audios as easy “beach reads” but between the narrator over enunciating like a robot and the slow start, I just abandoned this book.

I tried for over an hour, even came back to it… but there are too many other books to waste time with something that is at best mediocre.

If the narrator wasn’t so annoying in her presentation I might have gotten far enough to get gripped by the story. Too bad.

Not Your Finest Hour Susan....

To start this review, let me say this... I normally enjoy Susan Mallery. That being clarified, this was one of the worst books I have read in a long time. To begin with, one character in particular drove me nuts., that would be Bree.. Yes, her character's history is sad, but really? It was over the top obnoxious, she is supposed to be strong and independent, but acted as if she was the exact opposite, and was mean. The other characters were a bit annoying, but not to Bree's level.

I could parallel many emotional feelings, with my own life. in this book. But I was more annoyed with the content of the book, more so than the possible messages Susan was trying to convey. The language was over the top, the graphic sexual conversations, and content were disgusting, and did not need to be there. I know Susan's other books had elements of those things, but this book felt even more disgusting , and with the lack of charm I have read from her previous books. It was crude and almost like reading a porn novel. Way over the top.

There were VERY few comedic moments, that I come to expect with Susan's writing. The only noteworthy giggle I got out of this read was the following quote. Oscar said to Ashley "Drama Queen" and Ashley said back to Oscar "Felon". (I did giggle). I won't give anymore away, but that was funny.

Let's discuss Tanya Eby, I find her narration to be somewhat "whiny" in nature. Which is most of her narration style, and I find it a bit off putting / annoying. All the characters sound like they are whining (WAAA WAAA WAA). I wish she could work on that. I have been spoiled by Therese Plummer and a couple of narrators. I don't dislike Tanya, but I find she does not read the characters well, and the male voices are annoying. Maybe that is part of the reason Bree was an annoying character?

I am disappointed with this book and wish I could have enjoyed it more. But alas I did not. I wish I did not waste a credit on this read.

X-rated

It’s been a few years since I listened to Susan Mallery book and was shocked to find it was more like listening to soft porn instead of romance.

Immature

I cannot believe I actually listened to the whole book because these women are so immature for their ages. If they were early 20’s I could understand it. No wonder there are so many relationship issues for them.

Predictable and awkward

The narrator sounded odd at times and the story was very basic, predictable, and awkward. Would not recommend it.

Narration is painful

The narrator sounds like a robot a lot of times. It was very distracting.
The characters were not that likable, they were annoying and I felt myself irritated by them. I finished the book but it was painful at times.

Waste of an Audible Credit

I read the summary of this book and it sounded like it would be a good story. Sadly, this book was so hard to finish. I only finished it because I could not return it to Audible. The sex scenes were extremely graphic! The constant mentioning of masturbation and Earl the vibrator were disgusting. All the female lead characters are extremely annoying. They’re always talking about the same problems over and over and over again. Through out the whole book they are rehashing the exact same problems….Who are they going to date or not date. So glad that this torture was finally over, I will never read another Susan Mallory book. I read reviews that she was a good writer. But this has changed my mind and I’m not willing to give it a try.
