What the critics say

“The world that I am required to inhabit is this one. But the world that I long to inhabit is the one that Charlie Mackesy has created - a world of infinite kindness, wisdom, mutual care and tenderness, and true love between real friends.” (Elizabeth Gilbert, New York Times best-selling author of Eat, Pray, Love and Big Magic

The Ultimate Bedtime Book

I adore this book, so when I saw it was getting an audiobook version, I was extremely curious. How do you get a 58 minute audiobook out of something consisting primarily of drawings? However they did it, I knew I needed it in my life. I felt it would be best to listen curled up in bed, and indeed, that was perfect. This is the ultimate bedtime audiobook. I highly recommend you settle somewhere quiet and cozy, close your eyes, and prepare to relax. This isn't a traditional audio edition of a book, where the text is read and perhaps there are different voices for various characters. This one truly includes the charming illustrations. Charlie narrates the book himself, and his voice is so gentle. There are soft sounds of nature and music. Charlie tells the story of the four friends, describing the setting and surroundings so soothingly. There is a daring use of silence which allows you to picture everything in your head, giving you time to breathe and enjoy it. The hardcover version of this book has, as far as of mid-November, remained my favorite of the 195 books I have read so far this year. The audiobook adaptation now means it holds places one and two, though I refuse to decide which I prefer.

Beautiful

There are precious few pure souls in the world, and Charlie Mackesy is one. Filled with timeless wisdom and beautiful illustrations, 'The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse' is a wonderful book for young and old alike. Charlie does an amazing job not only reading the text, but describing his illustrations as well. One really does feel as though they are alongside the boy and his friends.
