Publisher's Summary

New York Times Best Seller

“A provocative read ... There are few tomes that coherently map such broad economic histories as well as Mr. Dalio’s. Perhaps more unusually, Mr. Dalio has managed to identify metrics from that history that can be applied to understand today.” (Andrew Ross Sorkin, New York Times)

From legendary investor Ray Dalio, author of the number-one New York Times best seller Principles, who has spent half a century studying global economies and markets, Principles for Dealing with the Changing World Order examines history’s most turbulent economic and political periods to reveal why the times ahead will likely be radically different from those we’ve experienced in our lifetimes - and to offer practical advice on how to navigate them well.

A few years ago, Ray Dalio noticed a confluence of political and economic conditions he hadn’t encountered before. They included huge debts and zero or near-zero interest rates that led to the massive printing of money in the world’s three major reserve currencies; big political and social conflicts within countries, especially the US, due to the largest wealth, political, and values disparities in more than 100 years; and the rising of a world power (China) to challenge the existing world power (US) and the existing world order. The last time that this confluence occurred was between 1930 and 1945. This realization sent Dalio on a search for the repeating patterns and cause/effect relationships underlying all major changes in wealth and power over the last 500 years.

In this remarkable and timely addition to his Principles series, Dalio brings listeners along for his study of the major empires - including the Dutch, the British, and the American - putting into perspective the “Big Cycle” that has driven the successes and failures of all the world’s major countries throughout history. He reveals the timeless and universal forces behind these shifts and uses them to look into the future, offering practical principles for positioning oneself for what’s ahead.

In line with what I feel

Learned so much about the transference of power throughout history. His views of the rise and fall of current super powers and prediction of when things may turn for the worst seems in line with what I was thinking and I'm sure many others. It's like watching history repeat and unfold itself.

A coherent metal model to understand nations

Ray presents a very coherent mental model of why nations succeed and fail. Trying to do something like this is very hard since you data is always going to be fairly limited. Ray talks about the rise and fall of quite a few historical empires and gives flesh and bones to his model. Whether you agree with his views on China or not, it is a very well presented model.

Dynamic Modelling

The work helps you to construct a meaningful model of the world order.
However, one shall always remember that all models are decision making tools, not prediction of the future.

Eye-opener - Dalio is an Authority on the Topic

An explanation of the political and financial cycles throughout human history, how they apply today, and how to manage through them.

The vast majority of people are solely focused on the short-term trends and micro perspective that they do not understand the large impact events coming ahead of them. We do not see the forest for the trees. Dalio explains how to understand and manage through the big impact long-term trends and macro events.

Dalio does an excellent job explaining his understanding of the topics based on his thorough research, life's work, privileged relationships, and tools developed at Bridgewater.

This should be a must read for anyone studying or working in Finance or Government Policy. Further, this is also a must read for anyone interested in human history.

An incredible book

Clearly outlines Ray Dalio’s macro economic model of the world and where we are headed. This is an important book for our time. Very powerful. It will have you rethink your politics and where they fit into larger historical trends.
