About this listen

When a woman overhears a murder plot on her morning commute, she races to stop it—only to be pulled in deeper than she ever could have imagined.

Amy Nichols (Lizzy Caplan) was an FBI agent with a dogged need to protect everyone—until that instinct caused her to mishandle a crisis, lose innocent lives, and lose her job. Now a civilian working in private security, that mistake still haunts her.

One morning on the commuter train, she overhears a young couple plotting a murder. Ignoring warnings from her family and friends, Amy’s instinct to protect and serve compels her to investigate. But the further she goes, the more she finds her own life in danger.

Filled with mystery, suspense, and more twists and turns than a rail line, The Commuter is a gripping thriller by James Patterson, the world’s best-selling author.

Fiction or top secrets? 🤔

I love the audio narration! Somehow, the plane event crash is very reminiscent of the real life incident in Washington, DC and that makes me wonder if this is what happened behind the scenes. The book is also filled with some interesting unexpected outcomes which makes it more enticing.

Un-pausable

This is beyond an audible book, it's an audio movie. Lovely performance, editing and storyline.

unlikeable character

I'm not sure why they made the main character thoroughly unpleasant. She's a bull in a china shop the whole time, hostile, needlessly aggressive, rude and mean, a jerk. And then her mother is sweet, and her French billionaire lover too, which is just illogical. And she's wrong most of the time, and not shy about attacking anyone in her way. She literally gets people needlessly killed with her stupid plans, and the level of hate she inspires in the people she knows is demented. Overall, this story makes very little sense.

Disappointingly Rushed

This Patterson presentation - scripted by prolific Television/Podcast writer Aaron Tracy - is a little scattershot. It jumps across timelines and event to event at breakneck speed.. with revelations so abrupt that it would take five listens to contemplate them properly and put a plot together in your head.
The action is cinematic and the dialogue is reasonably realistic, but I found myself rolling my eyes at the implausibility at times (discussing personal growing-up experiences with a terrorist during a hostage negotiation, for example).

As to presentation: the full cast - featuring Lizzy Caplan as former FBI Agent 'Amy Nichols' is capable at delivering the script and Audible Originals sound engineers add effective sound effects and judicious incidental music. The sound quality is solidly above-average.

Altogether, 'The Commuter' rates 4.5 stars out of 10. It's not a terrible couple of hours for "free", but there are better ways to spend your time.
