About this listen

Raised to be my father’s weapon against the Coven that took away his sister and his birthright, I would do anything to protect my younger brother from suffering the same fate. My duty forces me to the secret town of Crystal Hollow and the prestigious Hollow’s Grove University—where the best and brightest of my kind learn to practice their magic free from human judgment.

There are no whispered words here. No condemnation for the blood that flows through my veins. The only animosity I face comes from the beautiful and infuriating Headmaster, Alaric Grayson Thorne, a man who despises me just as much as I loathe him and everything he stands for.

But that doesn’t mean secrets don’t threaten to tear the school in two. No one talks about the bloody massacre that forced it to close decades prior, only the opportunity it can afford to those fortunate enough to attend.

Because for the first time in fifty years, the Coven will open its wards to the Thirteen: thirteen promising students destined to change the world.

If the ghosts of Hollow’s Groves’ victims don’t kill them first...

The Coven is book one in the Coven of Bones series and ends on a cliffhanger. This is a gothic, dark-academia, paranormal romance and includes elements that may be triggering to some listeners.

I enjoyed the story greatly. I recieved the hardcover verson of the book as a gift, and already had the audiobook, so I decided to read the book and listen along at the same time. The performance was good, and the story overall is enjoyable... But the audiobook is abridged! Why? I couldn't find a warning and the recordings left the oddest things out or changed various sentences. It even left out an entire chapter! Why?!? Please don't do this. At least give a person a warning that the audiobook doesn't match the original story. It's frustrating and weird. This book gets 5 stars on Goodreads, but the audiobook felt a bit disappointing, like I was being robbed of important scenes and information relevant to the plot.

Why is this Abridged?

I have the physical copy of the book that came out th same year as the audiobook. however the audiobook does not follow the entirety of the story. it leaves out large chunks of the story, and the sentences are not always said in the proper sequence. this makes immersive reading difficult, and if you only listen to the audio book you miss out on aspects of the story.

over all the book is fantastic, I wish the audiobook was accurate to the book, which made this disappointing for me.

the whole story is not in the audio book

Wished it was more dual narration between male and female voices. The female narrator did not narrate male voices with much emotion and it felt flat. Male narrator didn’t match the character IMO. Female narrator also was not the best at conveying passion/emotion during spicy scenes

LOVE this. As far as world building and overall plot, this was a very well written book and I cannot wait for book 2, I don't see this being an only 2 book series as it has so much potential to be a great trilogy and beyond. There aren't a bunch of secondary characters to keep track of, and I thought the author could have done a bit better with the FMC's relationship with her peers as there is one part of the book I didnt see coming and I felt was thrown in there to make us feel okay with what happened to them lol basically no attachments were formed to anyone but FMC, and her ML. Her relationship with her brother is always incredibly sweet, but this girl needs a friend or two forsure. LOVE the cliffhanger and can't see where book two takes us.

This is a very well written piece of work!

The narration of this book (duel) is performed well. HOWEVER, there seems to be a lot of liberties taken especially from the female narrators side.
This audiobook seems more of an abridged version.
Examples:
She swaps the word 'ancestors' to 'aunt' continuously.
'Was' becomes 'were' and vice versa.
The small errors I understand if past and present tense was integral to the plot.
This biggest culprit as chapter 13.
In the audiobook, it starts with her first day at the so called school.
What the listener is unaware of is 3 pages of missing dream sequence based from her other Black magic (deceased relative giving warnings), the fact she has a rose keeping watch in her room (think plant security camera), and her being slightly aware of what happened previously. (end of ch 12)
Then, after another page of narration, there are 3 more paragraphs skipped.
It will lead to the listener feeling like they missed something that is revealed later.
Maybe stick to with the physical or,for the audio, just go with the flow and don't think too much.
