About this listen

The critically acclaimed novelist and social critic Aldous Huxley, describes his personal experimentation with the drug mescaline and explores the nature of visionary experience. The title of this classic comes from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell: "If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things through narrow chinks of his cavern."©1954 Aldous Huxley (P)2009 BBC Audio Philosophy Psychology Psychology & Mental Health Physical Exercise Yoga Health

I like the eloquent way Aldus described his experiences. it must have been very controversial at the time

short and worth the time

An immaculate account of his mystical experience with Mescaline. Boarding on aggrandizement but within the boundaries of a true journey entails. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and would very much recommend to others.

Aldous Huxley at his literary best

Looks like I need to find some mescaline. A very interesting listen. Let me know if you know a guy

He goes rambling on to too many different tangents. Glad I read it but feels like more of a historical piece than a book.

A bit dated

good narration, great experiences shared in these 2 chapters. love it overall. Would definitely recommend to someone interested in psychology, cognition, perceptions and psychedelics.

in for a ride

Some mind/ thought expanding ideas and observations. Difficult to comment on a lot of the content without, partaking in the "experience".

In general, regardless of the mescaline, it seems the author opened himself to new/ different ways of seeing, feeling, being. He tries to get the listener/reader to also open to some of them and experience living outside of traditional methods. The depth of language was a bit much for me at times yet I was still able to obtain the message. Huxley is an artist and an author so I don't expect him to speak like a scientist. There is art in the language. Whether or not that is due to the mescaline in this instance...

Short listen, worth the time. Went through twice just to anchor some of the concepts.

Have to say, got a good chuckle from the idea of the Catholic church turning to mescaline. Won't say more, listen for yourself.

Happy listening

Interesting...

It’s more a presentation than a book, there are no chapters, or any kind of structure to it almost feels like a professor speaking
Very interesting concepts, but then again, they are all presented without going Into them properly
The narrator is absolutely wonderful

Not so much a book, but quite interesting

Don’t doit

this book is an account of Huxley's ideas regarding psychedelic drugs; their effects and uses to humanity. dispute the books age it is still relevant as this topic was tabo for so many years so the science has not progressed far, but I think his philosophies are much more timeless than the few scientific observation and ideas put forward.

compelling and profoundly interesting

I very much enjoyed a very well read experience of the mind opening and the consciousness expanding, when Aldous experiences his consciousness merging with an incredible Teaacher Plant. Aldous shares with us his incredible experience while scientifically noting various aspects that expand your minds perception of reality, but also the perception BEAUTY!

Amazing!
