Publisher's Summary

From the New York Times best-selling author and master of “bone-chilling suspense” (People) comes another pause-resisting look inside one family’s past as buried secrets threaten to come to light.

Gifted musician Clemency Thompson is playing for tourists on the streets of Southern France when she receives an urgent text message. Her childhood friend, Lucy, is demanding her immediate return to London.

It’s happening, says the message. The baby is back.

Libby Jones was only six months old when she became an orphan. Now 25, she’s astounded to learn of an inheritance that will change her life. A gorgeous, dilapidated townhouse in one of London’s poshest neighborhoods has been held in a trust for her all these years. Now, it’s hers.

As Libby investigates the story of her birth parents and the dark legacy of her new home, Clemency and Lucy are headed her way to uncover, and possibly protect, secrets of their own. What really happened in that rambling Chelsea mansion when they were children? And are they still at risk?

Jewell’s novels have been praised as “sure to please fans of Ruth Ware and A.J. Finn” (Library Journal), and her latest is no exception. The Family Upstairs will keep you guessing until the very end.

Sample contains spoilers

I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it, but I listened to the full sample before downloading. Instead of being from the first chapter or two like usual, it’s from a chapter near the end of book and references info you don’t get until past halfway through.

This was INSANE

I have no idea why it took me so long to write a review of this book, considering how amazing it was. Seriously, this story was all kinds of crazy and it was an awesome ride. You really need to experience it for yourself, so if you are considering purchasing, just do it!!

My second Lisa Jewell book and I plan on checking out more!!

captivating, emotional

Some terms are difficult to hear, but I agree they needed to be said. I found the perspective of the lawyer fascinating.

Another Great Read

Left hanging, but in a good way. It isn't hard to get right into the story line and the lives of the characters.

Not my favourite from this author

Of the 4 Lisa Jewell books I read, this was my least favourite. The story just didn’t grab my interest like the other books (invisible girl, the night she disappeared, and then she was gone). But I do like the way Lisa Jewell makes you think you know and even like a character from her books but by the end of a book you realize how dark and twisted they actually are.

Terrible ending to an interesting story

The only thing I disliked was the ending. The performance was good, but the story didn’t really wind down it just ended.

Did Not Disappoint... I LOVE LISA JEWELL

I am picky, and have never waited for any author to come out with a new book except for Lisa Jewell. The story is creative... and so many emotions: sad, funny, intense & dark all at the same time. These narrators— SO GOOD!! All of them. Henry’s narrator made me laugh so many times. Please... write another one soon!

Vague

This story was difficult to follow, and I am not sure I understood it fully, which to my mind is not the benchmark of a good novel.

Beyond disappointed! Not Lisa Jewell’s writing?!?

I couldn’t wait for it to end. Nothing like her popular novels. No mystery worth caring about, no suspense, no deep and relatable characters. Boring and lacking in imagination. Good to fall asleep to!

Just left me hanging

I was so into this book I binged nearly 10 hours straight. All the while expecting the boogeyman to emerge with a last minute twist. And then nothing...
My jaw literally hung open after the last sentence was read with disbelief. I was left thinking, so what was the point. Great character development, awesome narration but the ending fell flat.

Good Listen

This is my third listen from Lisa Jewell and I was not disappointed. The book was good, A bit short, and leaves you wondering if there will be a part 2. I really enjoy her imagination and her writing.

Confusing. Just ok.

I loved Lisa Jewell’s other books and pre-ordered this one. It fell flat for me. The first half of the book was slow, disjointed and confusing with so many characters. The second half was better, but I had hoped for so much more. I kept waiting for some bombshell to be revealed that I didn’t see coming to make this journey all worth it and it never happened. I’m surprised by all of the rave reviews. I’ll continue to be a Lisa Jewell fan but really - this was a disappointment.
