À propos de cet audio
Norway, 1940. Seduced by Nazi propaganda, Liv offers herself to the German High Command as war reaches rural Norway. She has something very special that they want in Berlin - but the personal cost will be terrible. Can she survive what she did as a naïve young woman in 1940?
England, 1968. Agnes, orphaned by the war, has grown up happy in the quiet wealth of the English countryside, raised by her adoring grandfather to be a perfect lady. But when he suddenly dies, she unveils a secret that changes everything. Agnes is not who she thought she was - and she is not safe.
Will Agnes pursue deep-buried secrets and put herself, and others, in danger? Will the truth set her free?©2024 Marius Gabriel (P)2024 Bonnier Books UK

The Isle of Jersey was once a warm and neighborly community, but in 1943, German soldiers patrol the cobbled streets, imposing a harsh rule. Nazis have ordered Grace La Mottée, the island's only librarian, to destroy books that threaten the new regime. Instead, she hides the stories away in secret. Along with her headstrong best friend, she wants to fight back. So she forms the Wartime Book Club: a lifeline, offering fearful islanders the joy and escapism of reading.

Alexandra Bouvier is born in Paris in 1900, at the dawn of a new century. From an early age, she is encouraged to think for herself by her enlightened family: her father, a French doctor; her mother, an American nurse; and her maternal grandfather a highly regarded newspaperman back in the Midwest. At age fourteen, Alex's comfortable life is upended as war erupts across Europe. Her parents follow their sense of duty to the front, performing triage at a field hospital and confronting the horrors of poison gas and trench warfare.

Dublin, 1962. Within the gated grounds of the convent of the Sisters of the Holy Redemption lies one of the city's Magdalen Laundries. Once places of refuge, the laundries have evolved into grim workhouses. Some inmates are "fallen" women - unwed mothers, prostitutes, or petty criminals. Most are ordinary girls whose only sin lies in being too pretty, too independent, or tempting the wrong man. Among them is 16-year-old Teagan Tiernan, sent by her family when her beauty provokes a lustful revelation from a young priest.

Librarian Sylvia Ashe knows nothing about her past, having grown up without a father and a mother who refused to discuss him. When she stumbles upon a diary that suggests she's descended from magicians, she's skeptical. After all, magicians are special, and she's just an ordinary woman who loves books. She seeks answers from a member of the most prominent family of magicians, but she quickly learns that finding the truth won't be easy, especially when he turns out to be as artless as her, and more compelling and dangerous than books.

The realism of the story
Un problème est survenu. Veuillez réessayer dans quelques minutes.
The characters are beautifully explored, flaws and all! Based on Nazi Germany, there is bound to be cruelty and sadness, which normally is hard for me to take, but the hopefulness of central character Agnes, kept me going and I am so glad I did as I finished the book with tears rolling down my face.
Heart-wrenching, wonderful story superbly written
