Publisher's Summary

Legends speak of wizards with the power to rival Gods....

To Hump, it’s just a story. Apprenticed to a wandering wizard, he grew up on the road, following the coin on whatever quest it took them. He always believed his master was just an ordinary hedge wizard, until the old man suddenly died, and his book of spells bound to Hump’s soul.

Knowing no other life, Hump takes up his master’s staff and heads out alone into a world of dungeons and monsters. Scorned by the gods, wizards can trust only their own wit and skill to survive.

Lacking the godly gifts and grand ideals of the Chosen few, Hump fights for something else. If he wants to eat, he needs to work. And with a new Dungeon opening in Bledsbury, where better for a young hedge wizard to earn some coin?

So begins the path of The Wanderer. The White Flame. The Hedge Wizard.

Experience the start of a Progression Fantasy LitRPG Series about a working-class wizard out to forge his own path and prove that one does not have to be Chosen to do great deeds.

About the Series: Multiple magic systems, spells stolen from the gods, and an undefined path of progression, The Hedge Wizard brings a realism-focused spin to GameLit/LitRPG. Explore a world of long forgotten legends, where the Gods now reign and monsters roam.

Different

Something in between light fantasy and mild litrpg. Not too serious as well as entertaining
I will definitely continue

Quite enjoyable

-ADDING THIS AFTER LISTENING TO BOOK 2 AND 3: book one was good, books 2 and 3 are WAY BETTER, this series gets better as it goes-
Narrator has a good voice, book was a fun fantasy adventure, not a LitRPG so I don’t know why that label is on this book, but it didn’t need to be for it to be fun and a good time. I was quite taken with the hedge wizards ways of magic and alchemy and am looking forward to more in book 2.

Great first book!

A great tale, good supporting cast, one of the best narrators in the business. Onto book 2!

Also very grateful to have a LITRPG that doesn’t have 100 breaks to tell the reader all the stats being upgraded all the time. Well done!

A fine fantasy romp

It wasn't really game lit or litrpg, which I was expecting. It turned out fine though! Hump as a character is flawed, and I actually really enjoy that. He's often looking out for himself, even if he doesn't want to - something of a survival mindset. I expected the story to go somewhere in a more literal sense - lots of the time they're in tunnels and caves, which starts to feel very same-y. Characters were strongly defined, but maybe too much - it was easy to see who the villains were the second they were introduced.
That aside, I had fun, it felt like Hump grew, and the narrator, though not perhaps as wide a variety of voices as I'd like, still managed to distinguish everyone and perform admirably. Solid if you don't want to think too hard about anything and just enjoy. 7/10, would let my nephew read it.

could have been a shorter book

I did enjoy this book to a point, although I found towards the end it was a little tedious. I just felt like it dragged on and on and on and the story could have ended sooner. that being said, I won't say anything in regards to the other books. however, even if you feel the same way, continue to read the series. I find the author did much better in the next books than this one.
