Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of 13 dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day, to whisk him away on a journey "there and back again". They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon…
The prelude to The Lord of The Rings, the Hobbit has sold many millions of copies since its publication in 1937, establishing itself as one of the most influential books of the 20th century.

There are tales of Middle-earth from times long before The Lord of the Rings. The story told in this book is set in the great country that lay beyond the Grey Havens in the West: lands where Treebeard once walked, but which were drowned in the great cataclysm that ended the First Age of the World.

J.R.R. Tolkien famously described the Second Age of Middle-earth as a ‘dark age, and not very much of its history is (or need be) told’. And for many years readers would need to be content with the tantalizing glimpses of it found within the pages of The Lord of the Rings and its appendices, including the forging of the Rings of Power, the building of the Barad-dûr and the rise of Sauron.

Combined into one volume, this is the definitive collection of Tolkien's five acclaimed modern classic 'fairie' tales in the vein of The Hobbit, read by Derek Jacobi. The five tales are written with the same skill, quality and charm that made The Hobbit a classic. Largely overlooked because of their short lengths, they are joined here in one volume which reaffirms Tolkien's place as a master storyteller for listeners young and old.

Amazing narration
It’s such a delight that the actor who played Gollum (Andy Serkis) in the movie “The Hobbit” is the talented voice that narrates this book and does amazing voices! It was a true delight to just listen to one of my favourite books as I knit or crocheted in the evenings.
I would definitely recommend this particular audio book for the above reasons!

Andy Serkis is the only person capable of narrating this whole story and series
Andy Serkis is beyond phenomenal narrating this. Who better than the actor who was part of the latest series of movies to tell this amazing story. The story is a true classic and the fact that Andy does so many voices in this book helps make it come to life. Whoever made this decision to have him narrate it deserves a share of the gold and riches from the lonely mountain. If there’s any doubt which version to buy let this be the review that makes that decision for you. Outstanding results!!!!!!!!!!!

Loved it! Loved it! Loved it!
I have been a Tolkien fan for as long as I can remember and I loved listening to Andy Serkis bring the world of The Hobbit to life. Many of the voices were spot on and I had a blast listening to the story. He pronounced the names of a couple of the dwarves wrong but other than that it was fantastic.

This Andy guy is excellent at voicing Gollem
Hahaha, jk, obviously knowing Andy Serkis plays Gollem in the films. This listening/reading experience was delightful.
I've been wanting to read The Hobbit for the longest time, but sadly my book has be simply getting dusty on my shelf. I'm not much for audiobooks, I love the reading myself, but sadly have not been in a mood to read. When I found out Andy Serkis was performing The Hobbit and LOTR, I searched for it.
Andy Serkis is amazing at reading the story. The voices and the feel he has for the characters. I can't wait to start listening to Fellowship of The Ring.
I say, if you enjoy the books, the films, and Andy Serkis, these are definitely the audio books for you.
