À propos de cet audio

A Cado Ezechiar Novel

In his first full-length novel, the vampiric anti-hero Cado Ezechiar finds himself caught in a web of war and deceit in the city of Aventhis.

Listen to it because

The cold-hearted Cado Ezechiar is obsessed with revenge and keeping to his strict moral code—can he stay true to himself and avenge those who he has lost?

The story

Cado Ezechiar is a wanderer who has outlived the memory of the age that made him. A Soulblight vampire who accepted the curse as his people and kingdom fell to Chaos, he now roams the Realm of Death and beyond seeking retribution and salvation for the ones he failed.

Aided by the bound spirits of those he lost, Cado follows a path of revenge, hunting the servants of Chaos to slake his need for blood while seeking the Sorcerer of Change who destroyed his kingdom. When his hunt leads him to the free city of Aventhis, Cado becomes caught up in the machinations of greater powers—beings who see the city and its people as dust in the eyes of ambitious gods. Torn between his code of honour and his desire for vengeance, Cado must navigate a web of war and deceit, or lose everything.

Great book. Loved it. Nothing else to say, I just want to hit the minimum word count.

I think you need a familiarity with the Warhammer fantasy setting to appreciate this. Not having that made it much harder to understand and get into, and this book doesn't work well as an introduction to the setting. Some world building things are a bit odd and just take you out of the experience. Like he's gone into an underworld realm to look for someone, but living humans have immigrated to live there, and there are other realms where the rules of afterlife are different but they're all part of the same world? And a few different factions show up throughout that seem to have specific motivations and goals but those never get fully explained so it's not as clear as it could be why they are doing what they're doing.
Cado is awesome. You do get a good sense of him. The anti-hero seeking vengeance thing is enjoyable and easy to get behind. There are a few great action pieces with him.
It's all just a bit up and down though. There are great interesting parts, then things really slow down for awhile before getting compelling again. Aside from Cado, a lot of what happens also seems to tie back into which gods a character is serving, and what the rules of magic are aside instead of anything relatable.
So overall there are things to like, but it's hard to get into and stay immersed.

mixed bag

I was excited going into the book at the chance to see a story from a soulblight perspective.
I did enjoy a few aspects of the story such as seeing chaos worshippers at ground level and the running of towns in the realms. However i this book felt like a slog. I do not need huge dramatic battles or massive revelations. I just believe the pace wasnt for me. The protagonist is surpringly uncharismatic. It felt at times like the plot was happening to them and not that they were driving it. GIven that this is a personal journey that really should not be the case. The narrators delivery is certainly accurate to the character. Very steady through and through. Yet it makes it difficult to finish the book. Not for me.

Just kind of boring
