About this listen

In her luminous and groundbreaking debut, New York Times bestselling author Pam Jenoff shows the unimaginable sacrifices one woman must make in a time of war

Nineteen-year-old Emma Bau has been married only three weeks when Nazi tanks thunder into her native Poland. Within days Emma’s husband, Jacob, is forced to disappear underground, leaving her imprisoned within the city’s decrepit Jewish ghetto. But then, in the dead of night, the resistance smuggles her out. Taken to Krakow to live with Jacob’s Catholic aunt, Krysia, Emma takes on a new identity as Anna Lipowski, a gentile.

Emma’s already precarious situation is complicated by her introduction to Kommandant Richwalder, a high-ranking Nazi official who hires her to work as his assistant. Urged by the resistance to use her position to access details of the Nazi occupation, Emma must compromise her safety—and her marriage vows—in order to help Jacob’s cause. As the atrocities of war intensify, Emma must make choices that will force her to risk not only her double life, but also the lives of those she loves.

No way a Nazi Kommandant would be that clueless. In addition the author writes that the Nazis didn’t write things down as they did not want their atrocities documented. This was an observation from Emma/Anna. From everything I have seen regarding this topic, Nazis were known for their meticulous record keeping were they not? There are literally millions of documents. I know it was fiction but I just found the Nazis in this book to be unlike most other accounts I have seen/read.

Not much of a Nazi

The first part of the book, not bad. Towards the middle .... well.....Emma/Anna OMG! could she be more wishy/washy. First she does then she doesn't. She changes her thoughts, words, feelings in an instance. Will she won't she? Overall could have been a good story if it wasn't for the main character having a 'pity me party' every chapter.

I couldn't leave this book alone. It was very well written, and full of suspense and hope. I would recommend it to anyone and it is a repeat read for me.

I LOVED IT

Halfway through and I m not sure I’ll finish it. I’m addition to the story being far fetched, the whiny tone throughout the book is really annoying. Seems like the Nazis are pretty clueless except for that one character.

Disappointed
