The new head however is convinced that the teacher's death is suspicious and quietly calls in Sarah Edwards. With her one-time detective partner, Jack Brennan, back in America, Sarah is at first reluctant to take on the case. But when she does get involved, it soon becomes clear that the tragic accident might really be a case of murder - and even Sarah herself could be in danger.

Story
It’s October in Montreal, 2002, and winter is coming on fast. Past due on his first freelance gig and ensnared in lies to his family and friends, a graphic design student with a gambling addiction goes after the first job that promises a paycheck: dishwasher at the sophisticated La Trattoria. Though he feels out of place in the posh dining room, warned by the manager not to enter through the front and coolly assessed by the waitstaff in their tailored shirts, nothing could have prepared him for the tension and noise of the kitchen, or the dishpit’s clamor and steam.

Publisher's Summary
"The Last Flight is thoroughly absorbing - not only because of its tantalizing plot and deft pacing, but also because of its unexpected poignancy and its satisfying, if bittersweet, resolution. The characters get under your skin." (The New York Times Book Review)
Two women. Two flights. One last chance to disappear.
Claire Cook has a perfect life. Married to the scion of a political dynasty, with a Manhattan townhouse and a staff of 10, her surroundings are elegant, her days flawlessly choreographed, and her future auspicious. But behind closed doors, nothing is quite as it seems. That perfect husband has a temper that burns as bright as his promising political career, and he's not above using his staff to track Claire's every move, making sure she's living up to his impossible standards. But what he doesn't know is that Claire has worked for months on a plan to vanish.
A chance meeting in an airport bar brings her together with a woman whose circumstances seem equally dire. Together they make a last-minute decision to switch tickets - Claire taking Eva's flight to Oakland, and Eva traveling to Puerto Rico as Claire. They believe the swap will give each of them the head start they need to begin again somewhere far away. But when the flight to Puerto Rico goes down, Claire realizes it's no longer a head start but a new life. Cut off, out of options, with the news of her death about to explode in the media, Claire will assume Eva's identity, and along with it, the secrets Eva fought so hard to keep hidden.
For fans of Lisa Jewell and Liv Constantine, The Last Flight is the story of two women - both alone, both scared - and one agonizing decision that will change the trajectory of both of their lives.

Intriguing premise
I’ve been anticipating this book for a long time and it didn’t disappoint. It wasn’t quite as good as the author's first book, The Ones We Choose” but I think that was simply because the overall theme of the book wasn’t quite as interesting to me.
The characters were realistic and well developed. The plot progressed well and the suspense was good. I loved the author’s use of language and the way she described everyday things so vividly and poetically.
I thought the ending was a bit too “easy” and would have liked a bit more suspense. But it was satisfying.
This was the first book I’ve listened to narrated by Khristine Hvam. She did a great job, as did Lauren Fortgang, in the alternating narrative.

Different
I was really excited about this book, the description sounded interesting and the press on it was very good. I even paid full price for the audio version, something I never do. It starts pretty good, then it quickly changes, not bad just different.
I usually don't like books with neat endings. This one has one with a twist.

I loved this book. The story held my interest and I was very invested in the lives
of both women. I did not like the second narrator's voice...at first I thought I would
have to trade the book in, it was so grating on me. But, I liked the story so much I
kept listening. I did not like the ending. I still do not know what happened to Eva.

Pretty good story and touches on important subjects. I wouldve liked to know a little more about one of the characters future but that’s the choice of the author. Most of the surprises were easily guessed but didn’t take away from the actual story. All in all a pretty good read and narrator did a great job.
