Publisher's Summary

The Lion. Son of the Emperor, brother of demigods and Primarch of the Dark Angels. Awakened. Returned. And yet...lost.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

Witness the Emperor’s First Son make his dramatic return to the 41st Millennium! Much has changed since he last walked among the stars, but not Lion El’Jonson’s drive to protect humanity from the threats that assail it from all sides.

THE STORY

After ten thousand years of dreaming, locked in stasis at the heart of his shattered home world, Lion El'Jonson wakes to the nightmare of Imperium Nihilus.

In this midnight age, the dying embers of humanity are threatened on all sides by the hungry darkness. Alone, even the Lion has no hope of prevailing against such evil – but there are those who would aid him in his quest. Hunted to the edge of endurance, many among his Fallen knights have long-awaited the day their liege would return to redeem them. The Lord of Shadowed Paths must gather these lost loyalists to his side once more, and stride forth to vanquish a traitorous son and the twisted Chaos warband that calls him master.

Faced with these strange times, the Lion can be certain of nothing and no one, except for himself. But in a galaxy without the Emperor, without the Imperium, without his Legion, and without Caliban…who is he?

More Mike Brooks Excellence!

Honestly after how awful the dawn of fire series was this is a much needed breath of fresh air definitely up there with ADB and Guy Haley.

The Lion lives!

I've never listened to one of Mike.B books and the narrarrator was new to but I was rlly happy with how they handled something as huge as another primarch coming back! the voices were good even tho they were a but different from what we r used to with J.K locking down the siege of terra. overall it's a rlly good book with some throwbacks to the heresy, I can only hope that this turns into a trilogy! after all roboute got one and there's alot of work for the lion to do.

Fantastic

As a long time fan of the setting I am very happy with this book. Before starting I was grinning at the prospect of The Lion having returned and was even more excited by the characters the book had in store. Timothy Watson was superb in his performance, his range perfectly supplementing the writing. Overall this was a great listening experience.

Cool Story

I confess that I'm not much of a WarHammer 40,000 fanboy. In fact, I know little of the mythos and less of the lore. Still, I loved this.
I am more a fan of conventional Fantasy (Epic, Dark, High, etc.), but I also read LitRPG, Marvel/DC, Star Wars, and YA. 'The Lion: Son Of The Forest' fit into my wheelhouse nicely.
This Mike Brooks offering is a little heavy on throne room confrontations - reintroducing Lion El'Johnson (resurrected after 10 Millenia) fighting to establish his identity, retake control of the Dark Angels, and hunt down Chaos Marines/Heretics - but has plenty of well-choreographed man-to-man combat action and is quite easy to follow. Even though I'm not versed in the canon, Brooks introduces enough story background to make it easy to immerse myself into the WH40K universe (this book prompted me to explore the WarHammer FanWiki to find out why players are so enamored/involved. It turns out that the fantastical reality is both imaginative and captivating).

Doubtless, outstanding reading from Timothy Watson - backed up by exemplary technical support from Black Library sound engineers - improved my impression of the book. Mr Watson's voice-acting is genuinely cinematic (among the best performances of distinctive, vivid character interpretations that I have ever heard.. although it undoubtedly helps that there are no female characters and no need to attempt accents).

Altogether, I rate this audiobook 9 stars out of 10. Existing WH40K afficianados will absolutely LOVE this installment in the canon.. but even a relative newbie like me will enjoy it.

40k awesomesauce

Warhammer 40k awesome sauce. There are only so many times we get a loyal primarch showing up and this book is a satisfying way to do it.
