Publisher's Summary

From best-selling author of The $100 Startup and Side Hustle comes Chris Guillebeau's engaging story about the power you have to create your own financial destiny.

Like financial classics The Latte Factor and The Richest Man in Babylon, The Money Tree uses a compelling story with captivating characters to share its core insight: You are never at the mercy of fortune as long as you have an appetite for hard work and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone.

Jake Aarons is in trouble. He's being evicted from his apartment in less than 30 days, the bill for his $50,000 in overdue student loans is almost due, and the digital marketing agency he works at just implemented a new military-style grading system that might cost him his job. To top it off, Jake's new relationship with Maya was going so well...but with everything else falling down around him, he might lose her, too.

In search of answers, Jake reluctantly attends a weekly group meeting at the invitation of a coworker. Everyone in the group is trying to create a lucrative side hustle with one key requirement: They can only spend up to $500 before earning a profit. Over the course of several weeks, Jake undertakes a series of challenges, first learning how to make $1,000 in a single weekend, and ultimately how to discover the untapped skills he needs to take control of his finances - and his life.

Loud and clear

As always, Chris brings a clear positive story. I never get tired of his podcast, website and books. I didn't start anything yet, but it makes me feel like I could easily start right now!

Chris Guillebeau never disappoints!

I’ve read most of Chris Gillebeau’s books and I have never been disappointed. His first book, the art of non-conformity” truly changed my life and way of living. I became a digital nomad, quit my corporate job and took the leap to entrepreneurship.

The money tree was an interesting new storytelling approach he has taken to hone in many of the lessons he teaches in his side hustle and $100 startup book. I particularly liked the comparison he demonstrates between building a traditional tech start up vs his recommended way of starting small. This comparison has been on my mind for some time now and this book gave me a clearer perspective.

Thank you Chris for all your work and I hope we continue to read new work from you.

it's good but it isnt great

If you know a lot about side hustles and financial freedom etc, this book probably isnt for you unless you want a decent story. I liked the book and thought it did a good job of what it was meant to do, which is show people who dont know anything about making money on the side that there is ways to make money other than your 9-5. the story is good and is really the only reason I kept reading, however, I didnt learn very much as I already knew a lot of what was talked about. If you are just starting to explore the concept of making money in unique and creative ways, this book can teach a lot!

A different way to teach lessons about money!

The money tree was great! I was honestly surprised about the way the writer chose To teach us lessons about money. This is not your typical money lessons book. I will be sharing this with as many people as possible. I’m also so inspired to start working on my side hustle.
Thank you!

Excellent for those starting out

This book was excellent. I wish I had it available to me 2-3 years ago when I began my journey out of the 9-5 lifestyle. Regardless, I found it eye opening and motivational.

Entertaining, and inspiring

Although the concepts in this book are pretty basic if you have thought about side business before, the format of this book really pulled me in and inspired me to work on a side business.

Pretty good book

I enjoyed the book overall, but did find that my mind would drift a bit while listening to it. It wasn't overly captivating. This story is for somebody who is looking to start something from nothing (No capital).Since I do have money to put into my business, this wasn't the perfect fit for me.
