À propos de cet audio
USA Today Bestseller! "Full of tongue-in-cheek humor, excellent dialogue, and fantastic characters, this expertly crafted story from Carter (The Blonde Identity) is a heart-melting rivals-to-lovers romance combined with a delightful locked-room mystery." — Library Journal (starred review)
Knives Out gets a holiday rom-com twist in this rivals-to-lovers romance-mystery from New York Times bestselling author Ally Carter.
The bridge is out. The phones are down. And the most famous mystery writer in the world just disappeared out of a locked room two days before Christmas.
Meet Maggie Chase and Ethan Wyatt:
She’s the new Queen of the Cozy Mystery.
He’s Mr. Big-time Thriller Guy.
She hates his guts.
He thinks her name is Marcie (no matter how many times she’s told him otherwise.)
But when they both accept a cryptic invitation to attend a Christmas house party at the English estate of a reclusive fan, neither is expecting their host to be the most powerful author in the world: Eleanor Ashley, the Duchess of Death herself.
That night, the weather turns, and the next morning Eleanor is gone.
She vanished from a locked room, and Maggie has to wonder: Is Eleanor in danger? Or is it all some kind of test? Is Ethan the competition? Or is he the only person in that snowbound mansion she can trust?
As the snow gets deeper and the stakes get higher, every clue will bring Maggie and Ethan closer to the truth—and each other. Because, this Christmas, these two rivals are going to have to become allies (and maybe more) if they have any hope of saving Eleanor.
Assuming they don’t kill each other first.
The laugh out loud holiday "romystery" that you've been waiting for!

Living in a year around Christmas town has its drawbacks. The caroling, the decorations, the insanely cheery spirit, it never disappears. It's why I like to hibernate away in my cave - I mean housekeeping a healthy distance from the holly jolly spirits. And all was going according to plan until my nemesis, Storee Taylor, moved in next door to care for her Aunt Cindy. Without blinking, she turned my simple world into a real nightmare-before-Christmas, especially when she decided to enter the town Christmas Kringle contest - which she was determined to win.

I went back and forth on this book the entire time I was reading it, and in the end, a low three-star rating feels fair and honest for my experience.
This isn’t a bad book, and I’m not mad that I read it — but it took a long time to get there. In fact, it took me about 95 pages before I finally started to connect with the story in any meaningful way. For a book that’s only 290 pages, that’s pretty significant. If I’m being completely honest, if I had been reading this physically instead of listening to the audiobook, I almost certainly would have DNF’d early on.
The audiobook narrators absolutely carried this experience for me, especially in the first third. Their performance kept me going when I wasn’t yet enjoying the story itself, and they deserve real credit for that.
I think the biggest reason this book didn’t fully work for me is that I was never equally invested in all of its elements. The mystery/whodunit aspect didn’t hold my interest, and when the book leaned too heavily into that, I found myself bored or disengaged. However, the romance did grow on me, which I wasn’t expecting. The banter — while sometimes a bit much early on — eventually started to feel genuinely cute, and there were moments of humor that really worked for me.
I also appreciated that the central miscommunication between the characters didn’t drag on for the entire book. Once it was addressed, the story was better for it. I liked that Maggie and Ethan had some history between them — nothing overly dramatic, but enough to give their dynamic emotional grounding.
Where this book truly shined for me was in its emotional moments. When it leaned into Maggie’s vulnerability, class resentment, and internal struggles, those sections were easily the strongest parts of the story for me. Unfortunately, the book doesn’t stay in that space consistently, which made the overall reading experience feel uneven.
I did find the structure confusing at times, especially with the shifts in timeline. Listening on audio likely made that more noticeable, and I think I would’ve had an easier time tracking those transitions in print.
Overall, this was a mixed experience. There were moments where it felt like a 2.5-star read, and others where it climbed closer to a solid 3 or slightly higher. While this isn’t a book I’m eager to reread, I also can’t say I’d never pick it up again — I definitely wouldn’t hesitate to pickup from this author again.
Lastly, props to the cover art, which is absolutely stunning. The artwork is gorgeous and was one of the things that initially drew me to the book.
Uneven, sometimes frustrating, but not without its strengths — a low three stars feels right.
Saskia Maarleveld is my favourite narrator

The story follows two rival writers (Maggie and Ethan) who are mysteriously invited to an English castle where the host—a renowned crime author—suddenly goes missing. And someone might be trying to kill her. To solve the case, Maggie and Ethan must work together and confront the simmering tension between them.
Maggie and Ethan are so much fun. Not only is their chemistry and banter delightful, but they are relatable and charming. Maggie is fiery and awkward, and Ethan is the "cool" guy to counter her. Their romance is so heart-warming and endearing and I loved seeing them bicker. All of the side characters were fun and added to the main mystery, but Maggie and Ethan carried the book.
I guessed parts of the mystery quickly, though I didn't expect the ending to go the way it did. The dialogue was snappy and fun, and there was enough action to keep the pace steady.
This is the perfect, cozy mystery for the holidays and I fully recommend it!
Cozy Holiday Mystery

Arriving at Mistletoe Mansion, meeting the "dutchess of death" is Maggie's biggest dream, untill a winter storm hits and things take a very swirling turn!
I really enjoyed how this book was layed out bouncing between past & present, giving us all the background information we so desire - comes together nicely to complete the story! I got such a kick out of Maggie's murdery thoughts about day to day scenarios, and had to chuckle a few times! Introducing all hot body, leather jacket, do no wrong Ethan. A man that you can guess how he turns out in the end, like most romance books today.
I will say this book was a bit predictable at parts but the tension, banter, between ours mains starts off strong and finishes stronger 😉 and makes it worth reading!
