Story
Operation Barbarossa, Hitler's invasion of Russia in June 1941, aimed at nothing less than a war of extermination to annihilate Soviet communism, liquidate the Jews and create Lebensraum for the German master race. But it led to the destruction of the Third Reich, and was cataclysmic for Germany with millions of men killed, wounded or registered as missing in action. It was this colossal mistake—rather than any action in Western Europe—that lost Hitler the Second World War.

Story
It was to be the war to end all wars, and it began at 11:15 on the morning of June 28, 1914, in an outpost of the Austro-Hungarian Empire called Sarajevo. It would officially end nearly five years later. Unofficially, however, it has never ended: Many of the horrors we live with today are rooted in the First World War. The Great War left millions of civilians and soldiers maimed or dead. It also saw the creation of new technologies of destruction: tanks, planes, and submarines; machine guns and field artillery; poison gas and chemical warfare.

Many consider the Battle of Midway to have turned the tide of the Pacific War. It is without question one of the most famous battles in history. Now, for the first time since Gordon W. Prange's best-selling Miracle at Midway, Jonathan Parshall and Anthony Tully offer a new interpretation of this great naval engagement. Shattered Sword makes extensive use of Japanese primary sources. It also corrects the many errors of Mitsuo Fuchida's Midway: The Battle That Doomed Japan It thus forces a major, potentially controversial reevaluation of the great battle.

The fighting between the German and Russian armies in the Rzhev Salient during World War II was so grisly, so murderous, and saw such vast losses that the troops called the campaign 'The Meat Grinder'. Though millions of men would fight and die there, the Rzhev Salient does not have the name recognition of Leningrad or Moscow. It was simply a vast tract of forests and swamps in the heart of Mother Russia that has been largely ignored by Western historians…until now.

Story
Napoleon Bonaparte lived one of the most extraordinary of all human lives. In the space of just 20 years, from October 1795, when as a young artillery captain he cleared the streets of Paris of insurrectionists, to his final defeat at the (horribly mismanaged) battle of Waterloo in June 1815, Napoleon transformed France and Europe. After seizing power in a coup d'état, he ended the corruption and incompetence into which the revolution had descended.

This Pulitzer Prize-winning history of World War II chronicles the dramatic rise and fall of the Japanese empire, from the invasion of Manchuria and China to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Told from the Japanese perspective, The Rising Sun is, in the author’s words, "a factual saga of people caught up in the flood of the most overwhelming war of mankind, told as it happened - muddled, ennobling, disgraceful, frustrating, full of paradox."

On 25 June, 1950, the invasion of South Korea by the Communist North launched one of the bloodiest conflicts of the last century. In the aftermath of World War II, Prussia - a centuries-old state pivotal to Europe's development - ceased to exist. In their eagerness to erase all traces of the Third Reich from the earth, the Allies believed that Prussia, the very embodiment of German militarism, had to be abolished. But as Christopher Clark reveals in this pioneering history, Prussia's legacy is far more complex.

On the 18th June, 1815, the armies of France, Britain, and Prussia descended upon a quiet valley south of Brussels. In the previous three days the French army had beaten the British at Quatre Bras and the Prussians at Ligny. The Allies were in retreat. The blood-soaked battle of Waterloo would become a landmark in European history, to be examined over and again, not least because until the evening of the 18th, the French army was close to prevailing on the battlefield.

Story
The story of Napoleon has been written many times. In some versions, he is a military genius, in others a war-obsessed tyrant. Here, historian Adam Zamoyski cuts through the mythology and explains Napoleon against the background of the European Enlightenment and what he was himself seeking to achieve. This most famous of men is also the most hidden of men, and Zamoyski dives deeper than any previous biographer to find him. Beautifully written, Napoleon brilliantly sets the man in his European context.

More than 40 years after it ended, the Vietnam War continues to haunt our country. We still argue over why we were there, whether we could have won, and who was right and wrong in their response to the conflict. When the war divided the country, it created deep political fault lines that continue to divide us today. Now, continuing in the tradition of their critically acclaimed collaborations, the authors draw on dozens and dozens of interviews in America and Vietnam to give us the perspectives of people involved at all levels of the war.

The liberation of Europe and the destruction of the Third Reich is a story of courage and enduring triumph, of calamity and miscalculation. In this first volume of the Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson shows why no modern learner can understand the ultimate victory of the Allied powers without a grasp of the great drama that unfolded in North Africa in 1942 and 1943. That first year of the Allied war was a pivotal point in American history, the moment when the United States began to act like a great power.

Extreme detail about an obscure battle

Written by: Rick Atkinson
Publisher's Summary
The Napoleonic Wars saw fighting on an unprecedented scale in Europe and the Americas. It took the wealth of the British Empire, combined with the might of the continental armies, almost two decades to bring down one of the world's greatest military leaders and the empire that he had created. Napoleon's ultimate defeat was to determine the history of Europe for almost 100 years. From the frozen wastelands of Russia, through the brutal fighting in the Peninsula to the blood-soaked battlefield of Waterloo, this book tells the story of the dramatic rise and fall of the Napoleonic Empire.

informative and broad.
Great book. takes a broader look at the effects of the war globally.
I have read several books on this period, but this is the only one I can think of that touches on the Brittish East India Company, Haitian revolution, China, Japan, and many more often overlooked aspects.

Good and comprehensive review of the early 19th century European wars and their impact on the world. European history impacted and dominated events that set the stage for much of the 20th century conflicts. Exhaustive analysis with some side tracks but worthwhile.

This book gave a very thorough, comprehensive, and unbiased look at any and all factors of the Napoleonic Wars. I appreciated that it dealt not only with European matters but every conceivable theater or culture that was affected by the conflict(s). Horrible narration
In the last couple weeks (simply for scale), I've gone through about five 18-35 hr history books, covering the 18th - late 20th centuries. I really wanted to at least tolerate this one, but the narration is almost aggressively boring. I honestly think it would have been impossible to read it in a more sleep-inducing manner if inducing sleep were the only thing between the narrator and certain death. I may have to try reading it myself, with my own eyes, even if it means I have to keep the cats out of the way. The reader has a lovely voice, but I feel he might do better to focus on recording bedtime stories and sleep aids.

Outstanding
I read a biography on Napoleon (by Andrew Roberts) about a year ago and wanted to circle back to a deeper dive of the military history of the conflicts. This book is very much not a robust military history in that individual battle tactics largely play no role in the book. That said, this book had a fascinating global perspective. While the book was more political than military, it certainly provided greater context to the conflicts and was very enjoyable. Definitely recommended.

One of the Best Books
I usually avoid comprehensive reviews of historical eras or global eras, since they are typically difficult to digest in a meaningful manner.
That said I found this narrative very easy to follow in that cover western historical content usually kept as isolated events.

More about East India Company than French Revolution
Not a bad book on a whole, except for frequently repeated lines. My biggest complaints are the absence of Napoleon’s rise and the French Revolution in anything more than a passing line. It spent much more time on the BEIC and British trade in general than it did on France

Excellent
The book itself is quite good in telling the history of the Napoleonic wars. Beyond the military aspect, it goes into detail on the motives behind each involved nation and the direct short term and long term impact.
For those looking for pure military history, this is not it. It’s focus is socio-political impact and it does it quite well.
The author does give some background to assist any readers who are more fresh to the era but only SOME. Expect to know some key figures, policies, and historical events as the author does tend to throw them out with expectance of familiarity.
The narrator also does a great job, especially considering the multilingual names, places etc. there is the odd recording gaffe here and there but it’s never detracts from the whole experience. I’d recommend to anyone passionate on the Napoleon Era.
