Publisher's Summary

The New Comedy Bible is a step-by-step, no excuses manual for writing, performing, and launching your career as a stand-up comic. Written by Judy Carter, the author of The Comedy Bible (2001), which was called by The Washington Post and Forbes as a “Comedy Essential”. This new book, penned in classic Carter’s style - part career coach and part comedy dominatrix - has 100 percent new content where you will:

  • Partake in 48 new exercises to turn your problems into punchlines.
  • Create 60 minutes of new material.
  • Discover your authentic comedy persona.
  • Conquer stage fright and slay hecklers.
  • Push part procrastination and get booked.

Whether you’re a beginner just starting out or a pro looking to create new material for your next Netflix Comedy Special, Carter’s proven methods are legendary among today’s top performers. Alumni of her workshops include: Seth Rogan, Hannah Gadsby, Sherri Sheppard, and Maz Jobrani, among others. As Lily Tomlin says, "Judy Carter helps others find their authentic persona and communicate in a way that makes audiences laugh." Interviewed by Oprah Winfrey, she said, “Judy Carter can show you how to make your sense of humor pay off.”

The exercises in this book will get you off the couch and onto the stage, helping you develop the skills necessary to envision, and achieve, a successful career in comedy.

The Consummate Guide to Comedy

The Comedy Bible breaks down strategies, tools and techniques to get funny.
There are 3 subtle signs that this book is valuable
1. If you apply the exercises you will learn to apply the lessons
2. You will be opened and focussed to find a comedy bible
3. The hard copy version of the book, is really great as a doorstop to keep wind-blown doors from slamming.

In all seriousness, Judy Carter is a pro and knows her stuff - the updated version leverages modern-day comics and cites best practices.

If you need to add humour to your speeches or want to try your hand at a local open mic, get yourself a comedy buddy and work through this book.

PDF workbook

I wish this included, if not the entire Comedy Bible Workbook, at least the pages where the exercises are discussed. Having said that, amazing book and it made me even more of a Judy Carter fan. Thank you!!!

A little too woke for myself.

The idea that only certain people can tell certain jokes creates further racial and gender division. Everything and everyone should be fair game within reason of course.

Essential reading for all stand-up comics

Loved this! I've been a stand-up comic for 5+ years. I'm also a speaker and storyteller. I wish I read this 5 years ago. I'm inspired to breathe new life into my act. Thank you so much.

Judy Carter's voice makes me wish I were def

This book is bad on every level and I returned it at the halfway point.

For starters, Judy Charter's voice sounds like a 90yo Jewish woman from New York has a cold and is whining because her kids won't visit her. Then add that she is talking so fast, that it sounds like she's about to miss her bus. This combination of tone and cadence was so grating, I actually felt myself clenching the steering wheel of my car.

As for context - if you are looking to write hacky, clean, dad jokes, then this is the book for you. In fact, it is obvious that a legion of comedy central comedians followed her format through out the earlier 2000's... you know, those comedians that did politically correct, clean jokes about what it was like to be White/black/Jewish/Indian/male/female/gay but you never saw more than once. In the three hours I listened to this book, Judy used the work Hack a hundred times, and yet missed the irony that what she was instructing was all pure hack.

Yes, she had some good tips: write ever day, look at the audience not your shoes, plan a gig. However, these tips are in every comedy book. Save your money. I got more out of the Ralphie May's Comedy 101 YouTube video than I got out of this book and his voice didn't make me homicidal.

Very relevant

She offers all kinds of advice in a simple and easy to follow way. One of the best audiobooks out there. I only wish she would include a copy of the workbook but whatever

Broad strokes and finite details

This book has everything and gave tons of practical and useful info, while still being entertaining. I will likely read it again to do the exercises, but even just listening while driving I learned so much. Thanks Judy!

Can you put the end at the beginning?

I just started doing open mics in Lubbock Texas. I really enjoyed this book. There are parts where it was hard to connect with the author, but the at end when she shared some personal stories and experiences she had with her students I couldn't help but feel like I understood her a little bit better. I think the way the book ended on that note made me want to reread everything under the new lens that I have for the author. I think my only feedback would be to get me emotionally tied into your story at the beginning of all of this a little bit more. At times it felt very text booky, but that's also kind of the point. I liked the performance, felt authentic, wasn't the typical perfected voice over that you usually hear on an audible book.

Thank you for putting this together. I know it will help me reach my goals.

Great Introduction to Comedy & Joke Writing

Thoroughly enjoyed this book, even though stand up is not the goal that I’m pursuing. I feel like I learned a lot about joke writing, and the creation of a comedy routine. I think this is a great foundational book for anybody aspiring to be any level of comedian.
