Publisher's Summary

When everyone is sleeping, he comes into their houses.

He takes one thing. A photo of their child.

A sinister thief on a power trip or something even darker and more sinister?

Detectives Jackman and Evans find themselves on the hunt for a highly unusual burglar who seemingly only steals photographs. But then, late one night, an elderly woman falls to her death after seeing someone in her home.

Did she really fall, or was she murdered?

And just how many mysterious intruders are there on the Fens?

With the body count rising, Jackman and Evans have their work cut out for them to track down the night thief - before it’s too late.

Quality British Police Procedural

This is the eighth episode in the 'Jackman & Evans' mystery series, but can be read as a standalone. There is, indeed, more discussion of the personal lives of investigators in this installment, but the main focus - as in other Joy Ellis efforts - is on the crime/investigation itself. In this one, the Fenland CID (Lincolnshire) hunt a fascinating killer who commits home invasions and steals pictures of 10-year-old boys.. while Jackman's psychologist girlfriend Laura simultaneously tries to sort out a troubling patient. The plot is twisty/unpredictable, well-paced, and informed by bizarre (but plausible) psychopathology.
Less fortunately, Ellis isn't great at dovetailing the plotlines (the current case(s) and her overarching exploration of individual detectives).. to the point that the narrative feels somewhat klunky - lacking flow.
Don't get me wrong.. 'The Night Thief' still exhibits a major improvement on earlier books (those had relatively less character development, for example) - it's just inadequately executed.
Overall, however, I appreciate the effort.

Richard Armitage has also improved as a narrator. His diction, timbre, cadence, voice-acting, and tone remain without peer - but his pacing is much better in this book (he usually reads too slowly). The performance in this project is spot-on.

I am grateful that Audible made this title available as part of the 'Plus' catalogue. I probably wouldn't have listened to this 8.5/10 star Mystery if it weren't free.. and it actually rates a Credit. Joy Ellis definitely has earned a fan (who will look out for future books).

[Incidentally: the contributions of a victim support group doing some amateur sleuthing is a fascinating plotting innovation]

The Night Thief- book 8, 2 stories intertwined

It was great to have the 2 stories interlacing in and out. Great characters, twists and surprises. Women taking some charge… Sorry to see this coming to an end… one more to go!

His narrative is superb. You can tell which character is talking even before they say.

The last in the series!!

I was dreading the day but yesterday was “It”☹️☹️
Joy’s final book in this series proved to be as excellent and thrilling as the first🤩🤩
As quoted in all my reviews - she is an absolute marvel at Crime Thrillers and has kept me entertained for a few weeks. No two of her stories were in any way replicated and I have been thoroughly enthralled by this wonderful woman’s mind🤗🤗. Thank you Joy 🙏💜

okay for a crime novel

This book a little slow on the uptake but picked up further into the story. I found some character building tedious and unnecessary.

Obsessed with the series

I always think it’s the best book so far until I read the next one… love how they solve crimes in each novel and also continue the main characters storyline and builds on their personalities in each book. Really allows you to intimately know the characters.
