The conspiracy to destroy the ruling family of the Annurian Empire is far from over.
Having learned the identity of her father's assassin, Adare flees the Dawn Palace in search of allies to challenge the coup against her family. Few trust her, but when she is believed to be touched by Intarra, patron goddess of the empire, the people rally to help her retake the capital city. As armies prepare to clash, the threat of invasion from barbarian hordes compels the rival forces to unite against their common enemy.
Unknown to Adare, her brother Valyn, renegade member of the empire's most elite fighting force, has allied with the invading nomads. The terrible choices each of them has made may make war between them inevitable.
Between Valyn and Adare is their brother Kaden, rightful heir to the Unhewn Throne, who has infiltrated the Annurian capital with the help of two strange companions. The knowledge they possess of the secret history that shapes these events could save Annur or destroy it.

Very much enjoyed the continuation…
..from the first book, Emperor’s Blades. Definitely the listener/reader is kept on their toes. Simon Vance continues to be exceptional in his presentation of the story. The story line/characters do not disappoint. The one thing I personally will say about the series thus far - it is not for the faint of heart. It is very descriptive which leaves very little if anything to the imagination, so be aware.

Amazing story with unpredictable twists
One of the best books I’ve ever listened to. Filled with suspense and originality. Kept me guessing the entire time and I immediately downloaded the next book in the series once I completed this one. The story continues to build and take unexpected turns that keeps the reader/listener guessing and never bored. Awesome book!! Highly recommend!!

A wonderfully narrated fantasy novel. I'm hooked!
The plot keeps you engaged, the narration is excellent, different voice styles for each character. I must download the next audio book in the series! Well done Brian Staveley and Simon Vance!
