Publisher's Summary

City girl Calla Fletcher attempts to reconnect with her estranged father, and unwittingly finds herself torn between her desire to return to the bustle of Toronto and a budding relationship with a rugged Alaskan pilot in this masterful new romance from acclaimed author K.A. Tucker.

Calla Fletcher was two when her mother took her and fled the Alaskan wild, unable to handle the isolation of the extreme, rural lifestyle, leaving behind Calla’s father, Wren Fletcher, in the process. Calla never looked back, and at 26, a busy life in Toronto is all she knows. But when her father reaches out to inform her that his days are numbered, Calla knows that it’s time to make the long trip back to the remote frontier town where she was born.

She braves the roaming wildlife, the odd daylight hours, the exorbitant prices, and even the occasional - dear God - outhouse, all for the chance to connect with her father: a man who, despite his many faults, she can’t help but care for. While she struggles to adjust to this new subarctic environment, Jonah - the quiet, brooding, and proud Alaskan pilot who keeps her father’s charter plane company operational - can’t imagine calling anywhere else home. And he’s clearly waiting with one hand on the throttle to fly this city girl back to where she belongs, convinced that she’s too pampered to handle the wild.

Jonah is probably right, but Calla is determined to prove him wrong. As time passes, she unexpectedly finds herself forming a bond with the burly pilot. As his undercurrent of disapproval dwindles, it’s replaced by friendship - or perhaps something deeper? But Calla is not in Alaska to stay and Jonah will never leave. It would be foolish of her to kindle a romance, to take the same path her parents tried - and failed at - years ago.

It’s a simple truth that turns out to be not so simple after all.

Great story

It was a light read, I enjoyed it. I wasn’t a fan of the narrator though. She consistently mispronounced Canadian words and words in general which was a bit distracting. Not sure why they didn’t choose a Canadian narrator. Still worth the purchase, especially if you like K.A. Tucker’s other books.

Good Story, not the best performance

The story was beautifully described and written with much emotion. The performance was well articulated, but the places named in Canada were not pronounced properly. Sault St Marie is not pronounced “Salt” it’s pronounced “Sue” it would be beneficial to research places in books your performing before offending your audience.

Good listen, irritating mispronunciations!

I found the mispronunciations to be irritating! The Canadian locations especially! I found it to be a good story though, light but thoughtful.

Pretty terrible

The narrator’s voice is grating, plus she doesn’t know how to pronounce Canada-specific words which is pretty annoying and sloppy on behalf of whoever produced this. But what is worse is the story itself. The protagonist is an absolute nightmare of selfishness and vanity, and you have to hear 500 descriptions of everyone’s physical appearance because that’s all the character cares about. I actually yelled at my phone several times listening to this before giving up 22 chapters in due to frustration. I would’ve be interested to learn more about Alaska, the father/daughter relationship, even the freaking lost hikers, but this is chapters and chapters of someone with extreme privilege saying “poor me”.

Don’t waste your time

Robotic narration of juvenile writing. Insufferable main character and annoying love interest. I was very disappointed! Do not recommend!

Excuse me while I book a trip to Alaska

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

Wren, a charter pilot in Alaska, and big city girl, Susan, had whirlwind romance. They married and had their baby girl Calla. But her small town Alaska just wasn't cutting it for Susan and their love wasn't enough to make her stay. She was cold, lonely and depressed. Hoping Wren would follow her, Susan packed up and moved herself and Calla back to Toronto.

Calla is doing well. She has a steady boyfriend and stable career job, until suddenly she doesn't have either. Shortly after, she learns her absentee father who chose his charter company over her has cancer. No job, no boyfriend and living at home with her mom and step-dad, there is nothing stopping her from going to Alaska to get to know her father before his time is up.

While in Alaska, Calla has to get used to the simple life of little luxury while also dealing with the grumpy yeti living next door. Susan warned Calla about not falling in love with a sky cowboy from Alaska, but will she heed her mother's warning?

I loved this book. Very early on, I thought, oooh.. this is going to be a 5 star read. The only reason I took half a star off, was because I thought going into this book it was a stand alone in a series with different characters in each book - not realizing it was a duology. Now to be clear, I am NOT disappointed we are getting more Calla and Jonah in the next book. However, at the end of The Simple Wild, it did feel like their story was unfinished. I realize that is intentional to get you to want to read book 2, but I kind of wanted this book to end in a way that allowed it to stand out proudly on its own. Like, you don't have to read book two, but you want to because you can't get enough of these characters and the writing, not because their story felt unfinished. Maybe I'm being crazy and asking too much.

Regardless, I truly loved this book. Also, I have a SERIOUS appreciation for Canadian authors, because whenever non-Canadian authors write about Canadian cities or characters, they rely heavily on their travel experience or stereotypes. K.A. Tucker, made the Canadianisms genuine and seamless.

A Wonderful Story!

This was such a wonderful read! The storyline will make you laugh, swoon, and cry. Memorable characters that you will fall in love with. I really enjoyed listening to the narrator, Rebekkha Ross... She was really good. I've read some criticism over her pronunciation of Canadian words. I was born and raised in Toronto; and I thought she did a wonderful job. She only mispronounced "Loblaws". I SO highly recommend this listen!

Looking for no romance and mispronunciations. This is the book for you

This book’s sole focus was Calla and her dad’s relationship. Calla was super needy and annoying throughout the whole thing. Like the whole situation with her dad having cancer was about her??? Um, excuse me? I think you’re in the wrong book then.

The major thing about this book was that the romance happened near the end of the book. The first kiss was at chapter 22 out of 28 😐 I’m only giving it a 1 star, because I enjoyed the last couple of chapters.

The narrator kept mispronouncing places in Canada. If you’re gonna have someone do the narrating for you at least make sure they do their research and pronounce these places right.

Great book

I’ve read this book 3 or 4 times now. I enjoy the character development and romance. It reminds me a bit of a Nicholas Sparks novel, with a few racy scenes, but it isn’t too graphic and isn’t smutty. This approach adds to the romance of the story.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 5 STARS 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This book.... yeah I'm just a ball of emotions right now! First, I have a love for Alaskan settings in books so even though KA Tucker is a MUST read author for me, I would have grabbed this up because of the setting alone.
This book was about so many things for me. The strained or nonexistent relationship between a father and a daughter, fixing things before it's too late, true love (maybe even soul-mates) and not making the same mistakes your parents did. All of these things are true, beautiful and heart-breaking in this story. I loved the way this book made me feel from sorrow, to anger, to love and to loss. Besides all the feels, this book had amazing banter between two of the main characters which had me smiling a lot while listening! The ending made my heart soar and there is nothing better to me than when characters figure things out and do what needs to be done no matter the consequences or fear that may arise! Loved this book <3

The narration was perfect! Love all her work and she was a great choice for this book!

I delighted in every moment

Sometimes it can be hard to express exactly how much we enjoyed a book. I could compare my experience listening to The Simple Wild to food (that bacon maple donut I had this morning) or I could compare it to a feeling (toes in the grass, fresh mountain air, warm campfires on damp nights) or I could compare it to another book, even (Northern Lights by Nora Roberts without the murder?). But none of it would really QUITE capture what I’m trying to say: that I loved all that this book was—all that I felt while listening to it (thank you Rebekkah Ross)—and I hope other people will feel the same way.

Eh

So this was kind of a miss for me. I am frankly really surprised by all the glowing reviews. I felt like the character development was really lacking and the storyline just did not hold my interest. I’m not sure if it was the story or the narrator, but it felt completely void of emotion...which is strange, given the topic could be quite emotional. I barely got through it and found that I was forcing myself to finish, just to say I finished it.

Emotional and Beautiful

I almost didn’t write this review because I’m late to the party...didn’t feel like I had anything to add after skimming the reviews..and potentially no one will even read this. But I just have to say this was a beautiful journey I’m glad I didn’t miss out on. I almost stopped reading this book a couple different times in the beginning. It is slow to start, imo. And the heroine doesn’t come across extremely likable. She’s a vain/superficial 26 year old still mooching off her mom and stepdad. Not appealing to me in the least. Also, it was at least a couple hours into the story before the H and h even meet. There was a lot of fluff and it wasn’t all that enticing. Further, I couldn’t wrap my head around a father who had just let his child “go”, not fighting for her, fighting for memories, fighting for time spent. He didn’t seem worthy of her coming to him. Being there. Forming a relationship. Preparing to be with him as his life came to an end. But I forged through and was delighted with the depth of the story and characters I found. I laughed. I cried. I fell in love with the storyline and the people, main characters and side characters alike. The h, in particular, showed a tremendous amount of growth and I was pleased with her character development. Narration was also good. I prefer a dual POV or duet narration but the narrator didn't disappoint. Highly recommend. Don’t give up if you’re not taken by the story in the initial phase. Beautiful. Emotional. A perfect example of how opposites attract. An excellent portrayal of finding love when you least expect it. Can’t wait to read the next installment. Kudos to this talented author.

Heartfelt Journey of Self Discovery

Overall 4.5 stars
Performance 5 stars
Story 4.5 stars

There was so much hype for this book that I was a bit intimidated to start it. I decided to just jump right in though and I'm so glad I took the leap. This was a truly emotional experience. Yes, there is romance, but the larger story between Calla and her father, Wren, is the heart of this book. It made me examine my own relationship with my father and how quickly things come into focus when time isn't on your side.

It took me a bit to warm up to Calla because she came across so shallow and privileged in the beginning. I understand that this was all a part of her character arc and was a necessary evil to allow her to really discover herself, but many times it felt over the top. I did like seeing her mature and change through the course of the book, and by the end, my heart really went out to her. The sparks between her and Jonah were deliciously fun and their banter and back and forth was one of the highlights of the book. The opposites attract/enemies to lovers vibe was the best and it was so fun seeing them try to get a rise out of the other. Jonah's blunt honesty was a little jarring at first, but like Calla, I came to appreciate his candor. I also really loved all the secondary characters, especially patient and loving Agnes. I did shed some tears by the end of the book, but I liked that the author left the ending hopeful and open ended.

The narration by Rebekkah Ross was fantastic and I thought she did an amazing job bringing this story to life. Her male and female voices were great and I had no problem distinguishing between characters. She gave an emotional performance, one moment delivering snarky quips and the next, heart wrenching dialogue.

This is only my second KA Tucker book, but her writing is truly beautiful. Many times I felt like I was right there in Alaska. I'm excited that a sequel, Wild at Heart, is being released soon, and I can't wait to get back into the wild with the yeti and Barbie.

The good, the bad, and THE YETI.

What a well rounded, complete story. I was not expecting all of the emotions that were brought on by KA Tucker but I’m glad they came either way. Every character brought something to this story and I felt like I could picture rural Alaska vividly. The details provided didn’t have me second guessing the settings or way of life at all. Calla & Jonah were so perfect in such a honest and real way that you couldn’t help but root for them. And Wren and Simon those guys broke my heart, all in all this is a must read/listen. (Trust me I’ve done both already!)

Calla and Jonah forever

Calla & Jonah have stolen a piece of my heart but so have Wren, Agnes & Mabel ❤️ This was such a great book about an immature girl who learns about her estranged father's illness and she goes up to Alaska to meet him and form a relationship....what she didn't expect was to grow and mature and become a strong, independent woman and to fall in love.

This book is a single POV and Rebekkah Ross does such a fabulous job portraying Calla.

This book is so moving. Women’s fic meets contemporary romance and Tucker hits it out of the park. The banter is great, the emotions are real, the love is swoon worthy
