Editorial Review

There is a voice inside all of us. Are you listening? The Untethered Soul, by Michael A. Singer explores what it means not only to find yourself, but to align with your inner voice in order to experience true freedom and an unencumbered fullness of being.

Singer presents a compelling audiobook and spiritual guide that is less about doctrines and beliefs as it is about wellness, mindfulness, and a search inward. His ideas are rooted in the idea that becoming untethered is less about learning a skill, and more about rediscovering your inner self, and ridding your life of the distractions that inhibit freedom and pure mindfulness.

Michael Singer is the founder of the meditation centre, Temple of the Universe. His work focuses on both yoga and meditation in a space free from religion or specific belief, in order to emphasize the central nature of finding inner peace. Both The Untethered Soul and his 2015 work The Surrender Experiment were New York Times bestsellers, garnering much praise and following.

The audiobook opens by encouraging the listener to listen to the ‘voice within’. In this clever and relatable exercise, the listener is able to pause, acknowledge a sense of self, and thus open their mind to an idea of self-awareness and identity that may have previously been overlooked. In this way, Singer explores the self, the greater meaning of life, and theories of the mind from an internal angle. The aim is not so much to teach, as to turn the listener inward, and rediscover the self, the Untethered Soul, that has always been within.

This book changed my life.

I have listened to dozens of self help books and none of them have impacted me quite like this one. The untethered soul will rock your world and break down limiting beliefs inside of you. If you want to live your most free and beautiful life, you need this book!

Best book I've ever read

I read a LOT of books. The Untethered Soul is still, hands down, the best book I've ever come across.

I also never leave reviews, however, I feel like I need to let as many people as possible know about this gem.

I will forever be grateful for Michael Singers masterpiece.

P.S - Narration was also fantasticly done.

Fantastic book and I haven't finished it yet

This is one of the books that can change your life. I have listened to the first part probably 3 times. Haven't advanced more yet. I am still working on the first part that is to say. It is a slow book. So if you are thinking, it is a light read on the plane, it is not. It is a journey, oh wait, it is in the title, it is a journey beyond yourself. The narrator has a fantastic and expressive voice as well that help convey the "story". a must read!

MIND CHANGING. You will be woke.

This book was so amazing and absolutely different than any other book I have read. So good, that I had to buy a physical copy in addition to the auditory book as well.

Modern day bible

Definitely some similarities to Eckhart Tolle work but easier to understand and grasp the concept. This should be mandatory reading for everyone at all levels.

Disappointed

I listened to this book because it was so hyped up by many of my peers. Like others, I found the narration to be my first challenge in completing the book. I found the tone of his voice to be very condescending. This book has left me with two expression in my head "You just simply...." and the idea of life as a binary of either being "open" or "closed." In my world view, life is so much more than "simply doing or not doing something" and "open or closed." This book is very "heady," filled with cognitive directives of what to do, and does nothing for teaching how to navigate the using the body as well. The body is a huge source of information for us, especially if someone has experienced trauma. Its not as simple as "you just simply choose happiness." I worry about how this book can be shaming to those that struggle to "simply do" what he tells you to do. For some it could be great, but those with more deeper set trauma or mental health concerns, its doesn't offer a holistic self-help healing approach.

Not what it was made out to be

I had high Hope's for this book after reading the reviews, but honestly it was very hard to get through. The story itself doesn't have any mind blowing information and it didn't change my life in any way (as other readers have said it did for them), it's mostly just common sense... the narrator's voice is so monotone it was hard not to fall asleep and took me along time to get through this book. I personally wouldn't recommend this book, I think there are much better books out there.

Pretty good.

Great for learning how to live more in the moment instead of worrying about past or present. Brings awareness of the voice in your head that causes worry and doubt. Great for mental development. The only con is that it was a bit repetitive which got a little bit irritating.

Exactly what I needed...

Michael Singer’s words helped me through a particularly dark experience. Through listening to him, I was able to see more clearly what is me and what is all the noisy chatter and judging that is in my mind sabotaging myself. The act of simply settling back into myself before reacting to any situation is a powerful tool. I am deeply grateful to Mr. Singer for his guidance. This is a book I will listen to many times.

Fabulous!

Okay, I love Tolle, Dyer, Chodron, Chopra, Ruiz, Byron Katie, and many others, and that won't change. But for the clearest explanation of how to disregard that 'nut' running commentary in my head, this book wins hands down. It is funny, I mean oh so, 'oh my goodness of course' belly laugh funny, and sensible and simple. I love simple. If you really want to understand who 'you' are...the real you behind the insanity, this is a great book. I found the narrator to be fine, not perfect but I had no problem listening to him. Listened all the way through first day and started over.

Amazing Content, Awful Sound

What did you love best about The Untethered Soul?

Amazing content. The book really ties together a lot of spiritual concepts and just says it how it is. I've read a lot in this genre and am hearing things elucidated like never before. I LOVE the description of the energy waves and the Dao as well as the description of the stuck energy in the heart. I've experienced this phenomenon in Vipassana meditation but it was never explained as plainly/nicely as this.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Peter Berkrot?

Peter's voice is fine, but he starts each sentence with a burst and then trails off at the end of each sentence. I'm listening on quality Beats speakers so it's not my system. The result is that the volume has to be turned up louder to hear the end of the sentence, and it makes the beginning part way too loud. To the mixing/mastering engineer: please USE A COMPRESSOR! It's maddening.

A straightforward solid spiritual guide

Listen to the narrator for yourself. I found the narration good and the reader had appropriate deference and sensitivity to the content. I did not agree with the harsh judgements regarding the narrator, it was fine for me.

This book feels like a good distillation of the many books I have read on Buddhism, positive psychology and just good ways to live fully. I recommend this for anyone who feels blocked in life.

Quiet Insight

What did you like best about The Untethered Soul? What did you like least?

The single greatest element of this book was the "Allegory of the House." Essentially, one will gain greater insight into the concepts shared after having progressed through the book up to the Allegory itself. However, I feel the Allegory itself could serve as a stand-alone. I kept waiting for the book to give more credit to divine intervention. While this is not for everyone, many people relate to this concept. The author does bring this point around in its own chapter near the final points of the book. If the God themes aren't for you, you'll be ok. If the God themes are your thing, you'll also be just fine.

What did you like best about this story?

The story did nothing, if not to help you find that other people are experiencing the same inner nuance you are. For instance, the author, at the very beginning, relates to the reader by admitting that he has tried to tell the voice in his head to 'Shut Up.' This relatively regular theme of intermittent candor is refreshing.

Did Peter Berkrot do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

I think Peter did a respectable job. My concern with his reading of this work lies solely in his volume level. Sporadic is the best word for it. At times, his volume is normal, and easily received, While other times, when he seems to be attempting to do the author justice, he lowers his voice for dramatic effect. More than a few times I struggled to comprehend what he had said, forcing me to rewind the audio and re-listen. I'm not sure what this does for my stats on the mobile app but I was concerned. ;^)

Was The Untethered Soul worth the listening time?

Yes.

Best book ever !

Please keep an open mind as you listen. Don’t try to over analyze the message.
If this is your first book on this kind of topic, there’s a slight chance the message might not be received in its entirety. Understand how the human mind works, how it interacts, and how it affects you throughout your day first, and then you’ll be able to get the most out of this book

I loved this book

What did you love best about The Untethered Soul?

I listened to this book over and over. There is a sense of peace and surrender that comes over me after I finish a chapter.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Untethered Soul?

Quieting the mind chatter.

Which character – as performed by Peter Berkrot – was your favorite?

It gets really good at chapter 14 and beyond

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

lean back and let it pass through you.

Any additional comments?

Keep this book handy. You will refer to it over and over again.

First World Problems

This book made me sad. I was a bit embarrassed listening to it. It completely discounts anyone with real problems in this world. Anyone who is struggling to pay the bills, or is grieving a lost loved one, or has a child with severe disabilities...will be offended by this book. It just too casually discounts any problems and instructs the reader to notice them but then move on.

Great topic, poorly explained

Would you try another book from Michael A. Singer and/or Peter Berkrot?

No

What do you think your next listen will be?

Not sure

What didn’t you like about Peter Berkrot’s performance?

Fluctuation in voice to add dramatic effect caused volume to fade too low to hear at times. Too much attempt at dramatization.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Any book on the topic of consciousness will have a couple of useful nuggets and this book was no different. Just hard to stay interested between the literary style and narration.

Any additional comments?

The Power of Now may be advanced and take great concentration, but I found it much clearer and that it did a phenomenal job of explaining the topic. I recommend that book instead.

Inspirational and worth striving towards!

This spiritual book taught me to detach more and to let go, which isn't new to me, but it's presented in a different way. I love it!
The only criticism I have is with the narrator. He tended to drop the volume of his voice on the last word of the sentence. I'd have to go back and listen again to get the one word.
