Publisher's Summary

From the author of The Longest Ride and The Return comes a novel about the enduring legacy of first love, and the decisions that haunt us forever.

The year 1996 was the one that changed everything for Maggie Dawes. Sent away at 16 to live with an aunt she barely knew in Ocracoke, a remote village on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, she could think only of the friends and family she left behind...until she met Bryce Trickett, one of the few teenagers on the island. Handsome, genuine, and newly admitted to West Point, Bryce showed her how much there was to love about the wind-swept beach town - and introduced her to photography, a passion that would define the rest of her life.

By 2019, Maggie is a renowned travel photographer. She splits her time between running a successful gallery in New York and photographing remote locations around the world. But this year she is unexpectedly grounded over Christmas, struggling to come to terms with a sobering medical diagnosis. Increasingly dependent on a young assistant, she finds herself becoming close to him.

As they count down the last days of the season together, she begins to tell him the story of another Christmas, decades earlier - and the love that set her on a course she never could have imagined.

The Wish

The story started off slow but once you start learning about the characters it gets better. The ending is worth the slow read. Very unexpected ending!

I cried

I Listened to this book a month after my Mom slipped away on her journey to the other side. I wish she was still here because this book would have made the best Christmas gift for her and I never knew what to get her…. I lost my daughter to Melanoma and when I realized this terrible cancer would play a role I wasn’t sure I wanted to hear it. The story is beautiful and so much bigger than the cancer. So while tears were shed for me, for the characters in the story, for my Mom and daughter, I know that like a character in this book my Mom and daughter were both lucky to have had their own love stories.

The Wish, a review

When I first stared listening to this story the content made me want to end the narrative but I persevered and am most grateful I did. It was the most touching story I have ever heard. Thank you so much.

The narrator is awful awful awful

Ugh. I am so disappointed. I love Nicholas sparks and have read all his books as they’ve come out so naturally I preordered this one. I tried you guys, I really tried. But the narrator of this Novel uses a constant whispery, mysterious voice through every sentence that sounds like she’s trying to be an audio porn star. I couldn’t finish listening and Audible won’t return credit on this one. A credit down the drain as now I’ll need to buy the actual book to read it in the way Sparks would have intended. I really cannot honestly rate this story so this review is only for the performance.

tearjerker!

I am a huge fan of Nicholas Sparks, and even though I read this book through audible the first few chapters were really hard to get into but I stuck through it and cried the rest of the way through. Brilliant storyline and I can't wait for it to be made into a movie.

Don't bother

I'm a lover of Nicholas Sparks books and have read just about all of them. I even pre-ordered this one to read as soon as it came out That being said, this one missed the mark by a long shot. There were no surprises with this book. No tears, because you see where it is going all along. I was so hoping to find something that turned or wasn't laid out from the beginning, but it just stayed the course of blah.

Now the narratation. It was painful. Their voices are great and I enjoyed the present day delivery. However the director must have asked the "teenage" readings to have a subtle laugh while delivering the lines every other paragraph to make them seem younger. It's so displaced and done endlessly. Endlessly! Once you notice it, good luck suffering through. Totally distracting, unnecessary, and takes you out of the book immediately.

Disappointing.

Warm story

His stories always pull me in… love the writing. One of my favorites…
I enjoyed the readers and Mark’s voice sounded like Zac Efron. So nice to listen a Nicholas Sparks story.
