Story
For Susan Green, messy emotions don’t fit into the equation of her perfectly ordered life. She has a flat that is ideal for one, a job that suits her passion for logic, and an “interpersonal arrangement” that provides cultural and other more intimate benefits. But suddenly confronted with the loss of her mother and the news that she is about to become a mother herself, Susan’s greatest fear is realized. She is losing control.

Publisher's Summary
From the author of The Longest Ride and The Return comes a novel about the enduring legacy of first love, and the decisions that haunt us forever.
The year 1996 was the one that changed everything for Maggie Dawes. Sent away at 16 to live with an aunt she barely knew in Ocracoke, a remote village on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, she could think only of the friends and family she left behind...until she met Bryce Trickett, one of the few teenagers on the island. Handsome, genuine, and newly admitted to West Point, Bryce showed her how much there was to love about the wind-swept beach town - and introduced her to photography, a passion that would define the rest of her life.
By 2019, Maggie is a renowned travel photographer. She splits her time between running a successful gallery in New York and photographing remote locations around the world. But this year she is unexpectedly grounded over Christmas, struggling to come to terms with a sobering medical diagnosis. Increasingly dependent on a young assistant, she finds herself becoming close to him.
As they count down the last days of the season together, she begins to tell him the story of another Christmas, decades earlier - and the love that set her on a course she never could have imagined.

The narrator is awful awful awful
Ugh. I am so disappointed. I love Nicholas sparks and have read all his books as they’ve come out so naturally I preordered this one. I tried you guys, I really tried. But the narrator of this Novel uses a constant whispery, mysterious voice through every sentence that sounds like she’s trying to be an audio porn star. I couldn’t finish listening and Audible won’t return credit on this one. A credit down the drain as now I’ll need to buy the actual book to read it in the way Sparks would have intended. I really cannot honestly rate this story so this review is only for the performance.

Don't bother
I'm a lover of Nicholas Sparks books and have read just about all of them. I even pre-ordered this one to read as soon as it came out That being said, this one missed the mark by a long shot. There were no surprises with this book. No tears, because you see where it is going all along. I was so hoping to find something that turned or wasn't laid out from the beginning, but it just stayed the course of blah.
Now the narratation. It was painful. Their voices are great and I enjoyed the present day delivery. However the director must have asked the "teenage" readings to have a subtle laugh while delivering the lines every other paragraph to make them seem younger. It's so displaced and done endlessly. Endlessly! Once you notice it, good luck suffering through. Totally distracting, unnecessary, and takes you out of the book immediately.
Disappointing.
