August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

Lexie has always bailed Annie out, given her money, a place to sleep, sent her to every kind of rehab. But this time, she's not just strung out - she's pregnant and in premature labor. If she goes to the hospital, she'll lose custody of her baby - maybe even go to prison. But the alternative is unthinkable.

Histoire
As I saw my newborn baby’s face for the first time, I tried desperately to capture her face in my mind - to stamp it onto my eyelids. As she was taken from me, I knew I might never see my daughter again. Thirty-seven years later... 'You were adopted'. Three short words and Sabina’s life fractures. There would forever be a before those words and an after. Pregnant with her own child, Sabina can’t understand how a mother could abandon her daughter or why her parents have kept the past a secret.

Description
“For fans who appreciate emotionally wrenching reads such as those by Sarah Jio or Kristin Hannah.” (Library Journal)
“Fans of Jodi Picoult and Kristin Hannah now have a new go-to author.” (Sally Hepworth, best-selling author of The Secrets of Midwives)
From the best-selling author of The Things We Cannot Say, Before I Let You Go, and the upcoming The Warsaw Orphan, comes a poignant post-WWII novel that explores the expectations society places on women set within an engrossing family mystery that may unravel everything once believed to be true.
With her father recently moved to a care facility, Beth Walsh volunteers to clear out the family home and is surprised to discover the door to her childhood playroom padlocked. She’s even more shocked at what’s behind it - a hoarder’s mess of her father’s paintings, mounds of discarded papers and miscellaneous junk in the otherwise fastidiously tidy house.
As she picks through the clutter, she finds a loose journal entry in what appears to be her late mother’s handwriting. Beth and her siblings grew up believing their mother died in a car accident when they were little more than toddlers, but this note suggests something much darker.
Beth soon pieces together a disturbing portrait of a woman suffering from postpartum depression and a husband who bears little resemblance to the loving father Beth and her siblings know. With a newborn of her own and struggling with motherhood, Beth finds there may be more tying her and her mother together than she ever suspected.
Don't miss Kelly Rimmer's upcoming and unforgettable novel, The Warsaw Orphan.

Emotional story
I really enjoyed this story. As a new mom, it definitely helps normalize the hardship and isolation that comes in various moments of earlier motherhood. It also tackles important issues about the lines of baby blues vs. postpartum depression.

Great story, performance a little lacking
The overall storytelling was well done. Maryann however has a different voiceover at times and a main character (Tim) sounds like a robot. Once I sped up the reading it was much more enjoyable.

A Good Read
This is my first novel by this author. I enjoyed the story and will look for another of her books. The story was a bit long-winded and I confess I skipped a few parts. I liked the characters and thought them to be realistic and was interested in their development. I thought the narration was terrible in parts. It was difficult to determine which voice I was listening to and many times, the voice was mechanical. Also it was easily identifiable when the narrator took a break and restarted.

A bit too drawn out but a great story nonetheless.
My first Kelly Rimmer novel and it won’t be my last! She is a wonderful writer. Heartfelt with characters you can relate to. At times, I felt that some scenes were a bit drawn out. I liked the flipping back and forth between present and past.

Mediocre at best
The story wasn’t that compelling and I found my mind wandering. A lot.
I did not enjoy the narration for Grace’s character and found myself skipping through her parts.
