Publisher's Summary
The year is 1880. Two hundred years after the trials in Salem, witches Adelaide Thom and Eleanor St Clair finally feel safe and have opened a tea shop in Manhattan, specialising in cures, palmistry and potions.
When an enchanting young woman called Beatrice joins the witches as an apprentice, she soon proves indispensable, but her new life is marred by strange occurrences. She sees things no one else can see. She hears voices no one else can hear. Objects appear out of thin air, as if gifts from the dead. Has she been touched by magic, or is she simply losing her mind?
Amidst the witches' tug-of-war over how best to nurture her gifts, Beatrice disappears - but was it by choice or by force? In the desperate search, the witches are confronted by spectres from their own pasts. In a time when women were corseted, confined and committed for merely speaking their minds, were any of them really safe?

Excellent Story!
Fantastic! However, the narrator took away from essence of the story with the voices and pronunciation of specific words. Im a big fan of Ami McKay but I really had to push through and get over the voice acting to enjoy the book. I would not listen to another audio book with this narrator.

I quite enjoyed the story. Some plot holes don't get filled, though.
I would recommend reading this instead of listening to it. How I wish narrators did not feel compelled to create goofy voices for each character!! Her reading is competent, but oh! Those cartoon voices....

Great story but…
Great story, very interesting and imaginative but the narrator’s voices for female characters drove me nuts and always took me out of the story because they sounded so juvenile and cartoonish for what should be the voices of adult women. This is one I wish I had bought in paper copy.

struggled to finish
The narration was great, but the story lacked scene description, or description of characters. I prefer more sensory prompts as it makes me feel as if I'm there. This is just my preference. I felt like it was written more like a movie script than a book.
