Publisher's Summary

From the celebrated author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds comes Kristin Hannah's The Women—at once an intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided.

Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is overwhelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day is a gamble of life and death, hope and betrayal; friendships run deep and can be shattered in an instant. In war, she meets—and becomes one of—the lucky, the brave, the broken, and the lost.

But war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America, to angry protesters, and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam.

The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.

What the critics say

"Hannah is in top form here... Hannah’s real superpower is her ability to hook you along from catastrophe to catastrophe, sometimes peering between your fingers, because you simply cannot give up on her characters. She gathers women into the (Vietnam) experience with moving conviction."—The New York Times

The Women is historical fiction at its very best. So moving, so wrenching, and yet, in the end, uplifting. Brava! I loved The Nightingale and The Four Winds, but The Women is my favorite.”—Nicholas D. Kristof, Pulitzer Prize-winning coauthor of Half the Sky

“One of the greatest storytellers of our time, Kristin Hannah, tackles one of the most cruel and despicable wars of the last century, the Vietnam War. The Women reveals the powerful contributions and horrific sacrifices of the American military nurses who served in a war whose agencies refused to acknowledge that they were even there. Perhaps no words can bring closure to a nation still ashamed of booing our returning heroes, but the heroine, Frances McGrath, stirs a deep, overdue compassion and tears for every single soldier—and especially the forgotten women who sacrificed so much. Never has a novel of war metamorphosed so profoundly into a story of the human heart.”—Delia Owens, author of Where the Crawdads Sing

Amazing

This was such a good book. I’m sad that it’s over. I also had no idea about the roll women played in the Vietnam war, the ptsd they suffered and how they pulled through it. Beautiful story.

Absolutely Loved it, and Julia Whalen is so great.

This story was great, love how it tells the stories of women and men that their country would have liked to forget about
as well as still humanizing the Vietnamese people who also suffered dearly and deserve to be remembered as well.
I could listen to Julia Whalen read the dictionary, adored this book. The nightingale still my favourite by Kristin Hannah that I have read, I did read the four winds and did enjoy it but also found it heard to push on when it was so bleak for so long.

Captivating story highlighting the remarkable women of the Vietnam war

As with all of her stories, the author pulls you into the tale that covers a large stretch of the main characters life. Love the story, the way it was written and read, plus the ample historical references.

Graphic moving story of a neglected war

one of the best authors producing heart-rending but balanced tales of neglected genres. The reader does a great job of capturing the characters and atmosphere.

What a story about resilience!

This book is wonderfully written. When you enter into the character only with words and you feels her pain and emotion … it is an art that not much author master.
