Publisher's Summary

Four-time Hugo Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author N.K. Jemisin crafts a glorious tale of identity, resistance, magic and myth.

All is not well in the city that never sleeps. Even though the avatars of New York City have temporarily managed to stop the Woman in White from invading—and destroying the entire universe in the process—the mysterious capital "E" Enemy has more subtle powers at her disposal. A new candidate for mayor wielding the populist rhetoric of gentrification, xenophobia, and "law and order" may have what it takes to change the very nature of New York itself and take it down from the inside.

In order to defeat him, and the Enemy who holds his purse strings, the avatars will have to join together with the other Great Cities of the world in order to bring her down for good and protect their world from complete destruction.

N.K. Jemisin’s Great Cities Duology, which began with The City We Became and concludes with The World We Make, is a masterpiece of speculative fiction from one of the most important writers of her generation.

So good!

It was like I was watching a movie. The performers accents brought the free indirect discourse to life and the addition of music added tension in all of the right moments!

NK Jemisin is a gem

This was my fifth of her novels and this two book series is phenomenal. The characters are rich and I quickly fell into their world. They feel like family and developed in a way that you care about them. The story is engaging and thoughtful, hilarious and smart. Would highly recommend (and I have to many!)

Magical!

I am a huge Jemisin fan, and this book (and its twin, The City We Became) are amazing reads - especially if you love New York! I wanted to write this review because this is without question one of the best audiobooks I have ever listened to. Robin Miles, who is always amazing, and killed it in The City We Became, is just absolutely off the chain here -- her voices and accents are amazing. It feels like a full cast production even though it's a one-woman show! But the production is phenomenal overall. Some careful, intentional use of sound effects and music provides a bit of color without overshadowing the story.

F@cking awesome!

I can’t express how much I love the imagination of of NK Jemisin, and she doesn’t disappoint as she turns her creativity to the magical realism of cities. The narration is excellent, the diversity in characters and fantastical ties with real life events is an immense joy. Highly recommend this duology.
