Hockey Card Stories reveals what was really going on in your favorite old hockey cards through the eyes of the players depicted on them. Some of the cards are definitely worth a few bucks, some a few cents - but every story told here is priceless. Sportsnet's Ken Reid presents the cards you loved and the airbrushed monstrosities that made you howl, the cards that have been packed away in boxes forever, and others you can't believe ever existed.

Story
As one of the NHL's most polarizing players, Sean Avery turned the rules of professional hockey on their head. For 13 seasons, he played for some of the most storied franchises in the league, including the Detroit Red Wings, the Los Angeles Kings, and the New York Rangers, making his mark in each city as a player who was sometimes loved, sometimes despised, and always controversial. In Offside, Avery displays his trademark candor about the world of pro hockey and does for it what Jim Bouton's game-changing Ball Four did for baseball.

Story
Gordie Howe may have been the greatest player in the history of hockey, but greatness was never defined by goals or assists in the Howe household. Greatness meant being the best person you could be, not the best player on the ice. Unlike his two brothers, Murray Howe failed in his attempt to follow in his father's footsteps to become a professional athlete. Yet his failure brought him to the realization that his dream wasn't really to be a pro hockey player. His dream was to be his father. To be amazing at something, but humble and gracious. To be a hero.

Publisher's Summary
Steve Dangle’s incredible odyssey, from self-starting Leafs lover to sports-media star.
How do you turn ranting about hockey into a career? Steve “Dangle” Glynn is a YouTuber, podcaster, and sports personality from Toronto who managed to turn a 16-second online rant about the Maple Leafs into a career in sports media. From video blogging in his parents’ house at 19 to yelling on televisions across Canada at 28, Dangle has been involved with some of the most important sports companies in the country.
In between tales of Steve’s adventures, both online and off, This Team Is Ruining My Life is also a kind of how-to (or how-not-to) guide: in an ever-evolving media landscape, sometimes, you have to get creative to find the job you want. This is Steve Dangle and his accidentally-on-purpose journey through sports media so far.
What the critics say
“Folks always say to me, ‘When Coach’s Corner is on, no one in our house is allowed to talk.’ I reply, ‘Neither am I.’ Now I find myself hushing my own household when Steve is on. Steve says he’s taken a page from us, but I know it’s novel. Enjoy.” (Ron MacLean, Coach’s Corner)
“A wonderful look at the rickety ladder to success in sports media and how one can invent their own way of climbing it. Revel in Steve’s journey from irritated Leafs fan yelling into a webcam to irritated Leafs fan yelling into much more expensive cameras.” (Greg Wyshynski, senior NHL writer, ESPN)
“A hilarious, inspiring account of how a kid who could barely skate managed to navigate a turbulent period in the Canadian media industry to become one of the most unique voices in our sport.” (Chris Johnston, senior hockey writer, Sportsnet)

Not what you think it would be..
Love Steve and his videos but dear jesus stay away from this book. Its a self story about Steve and his journey to Sportsnet. I hate Sportsnet Hockey and all this does is plug it pretty much. I found myself turning it off to listen to music most of the time.
Very very little to do with the Leafs and more of how he uses them to get where he is today. Sorry folks this book is Lame. I would advise picking it up at a yard sale 10 years from now if you want to read it. The audio book is meh at best.

Entertaining Biography
As a Montrealer, I am definitely not a Maple Leaf’s fan. Steve ‘Dangle’ Glynn , while a self-professed professional Toronto fan, does a great job writing and narrating his foray into a media career in the Maple Leafs’ world. Well worth a credit.

Far exceeded my expectations
I originally was exposed to Steve’s videos on Sportsnet during the COVID-19 pandemic, because a friend of mine told me to check out “that screaming leafs fan on YouTube.” I found his takes entertaining, and his delivery/banter to sound genuine. It’s refreshing to see someone on a major network who not only carries lots of charisma but genuinely loves the topic which they cover. That being said, I expected this book to be more of the same antics on his YouTube channel, which I would have liked.
However, this book is much better than that. It’s a solid and personal autobiography that is surprisingly relatable given that most readers are not media personalities. The way he describes his most memorable experiences attending leafs games and the Olympics evoked the myriad of emotions that I felt attending my first hockey game and seeing my favorite team win the cup in person (Tampa 04). Furthermore, hearing some of the struggles and personal adversity he faced and some of the reality checks he ran into were also quite insightful. One could definitely relate to how he dealt with his early success, struggles with insecurity, and the very human aspects of his story.
Anyway, it was a great listen and a great story.
