Publisher's Summary

Legendary homicide detective Jack Dantzler has never failed to solve a murder. Thirty-three killers apprehended, tried, convicted. Perfect, like God's soul. But Dantzler's perfection ends when three college women are brutally murdered, victims of a serial killer who strangles his prey, decorates their bodies with a St. Jude medal and photo of Michelangelo's Pieta, then lacerates the jugular post-mortem.

The series of murders reawaken Dantzler's memories of his own mother's murder when he was still a young boy. As he delves deeper into the case, haunted by thoughts of his mother, Dantzler must first regain control of his own emotions.

What Matters Blood presents Dantzler with his ultimate challenge, entering into the dark and twisted mind of a cunning adversary, who will stop at nothing to prevail in what he calls this "Waltz of Death" with the great detective.

laughably bad narration

The narration is the worst I have ever heard, without exaggeration. His pronunciation is terrible, he talks through his nose and slurs a lot. It was a very hard book to get through because of it.
Definitely learn from my mistake and listen to the sample before buying!
The story itself was pretty basic and not exactly edge-of-your-seat exciting, but I stuck it out because the villain was so annoying that I NEEDED to see him get caught. The characters were cliches, one dimensional, unlikable and, in the case of the hero, it felt like the author was writing an idealized version of himself. He was just too smart, too talented, too handsome, too good with the ladies, with the requisite tortured past. It was all a bit much.
Also, if you're not into reading detailed descriptions of people getting themselves off (I'm sure there were a dozen scenes!), give this one a miss. I've never read the phrase "he squeezed his penis" so many times.
