About this listen
Ten years ago, Izzy Stone's mother fatally shot her father while he slept. Devastated by her mother's apparent insanity, Izzy, now 17, refuses to visit her in prison. But her new foster parents, employees at the local museum, have enlisted Izzy's help in cataloguing items at a long-shuttered state asylum. There, amid piles of abandoned belongings, Izzy discovers a stack of unopened letters, a decades-old journal, and a window into her own past.
Clara Cartwright, 18 years old in 1929, is caught between her overbearing parents and her love for an Italian immigrant. Furious when she rejects an arranged marriage, Clara's father sends her to a genteel home for nervous invalids. But when his fortune is lost in the stock market crash, he can no longer afford her care and Clara is committed to the public asylum. Even as Izzy deals with the challenges of yet another new beginning, Clara's story keeps drawing her into the past. If Clara was never really mentally ill, could something else explain her own mother's violent act? Piecing together Clara's fate compels Izzy to re-examine her own choices - with shocking and unexpected results.

Engaging!
Loved the novel! Well written with characters who were well rounded. Great story. Highly recommend. Not historical fiction, though.

What She Left Behind
I loved this book, because it was one of the most emotional books I have listened too. It was extremely well written and narrative. When each chapter finished I just couldn’t stop listening. This book would appeal to anyone also interested in the subject of people being committed to insane asylums.

Awesome book!! Must listen to!
This book was good, but also brought me many tears. Of sadness and happiness. I could not listen to as a book to sleep to, I NEEDED to hear every detail Narrator is excellent too. I could fall asleep to her, have, but then I have to go back and listen to what I missed the next day. Although the story didn’t go as I want in a typical story, it really brought to life what many have endured in the past with psychiatric treatment and mental illness that has been and still is misunderstood. And other things that have happened in the past and that can still happen. We need to learn from history. And keep learning. And remember to be gentle to all.

bad grammar
I really enjoyed the storyline and the bit of history on mental illness in the late 1800s early 1900s. I had an awful time listening to the author failing to find another word to use other than he said, she said, he said, she said. the use of a thesaurus might have been a good idea.

not what I was expecting. Right from the beginning I found it very and utterly boring.
Could not even wait to stop.

Heartbreaking
Very well done. So heartbreaking to know that these things happened. Although treatment is different now it still is a relatively sad situation

Ok, this may sound picky but…
The story is pretty good for a perk of plus membership. Here’s the annoying part. After every character speaks, that author ONLY uses ‘said’. Every time. So as it is narrated she will do the voice of the character and then say ‘Izzy said’ but when it’s fast dialogue it sounds like, peg said, Izzy said. Jeff said. He said, Michael said… like a million times. I’m not sure why the author never uses exclaimed, whispered, spat, yelled, etc there are so many other words from ‘said’. By the end I only like the narration parts and hated dialogue!
