Publisher's Summary

When you buy murder online, who is there to stop you?

GCHQ agent Winter has just 14 days to bring down the website of a formidable criminal organisation before a teenager is tortured to death in front of an online audience of millions. Going deep under cover disguised as the paid assassin Snow White, Winter must infiltrate the inner circle of the extraordinarily powerful man at the heart of the dark web. This is a gripping, fast-paced ride through a disturbingly plausible technological future in which Callister’s protagonist must battle to bring down the terrifying crimes tearing through society.

About Winter
Master hacker, highly intelligent, combat trained: Winter is a very modern spy. Worlds apart from the straitlaced characters created in the minds of Ian Fleming and John le Carré , Alex Callister's lead protagonist wouldn't dream of playing the part of the impeccable agent. However, despite her intimidating skillset, Winter is delightfully human and often prone to prioritizing her libido over her employer. Undeniably sexy and exceptionally accomplished, Winter is a true 21st-century heroine.

About the Author
Alex Callister is the pseudonym of an industry expert on media, telecoms and internet stocks. She studied history at Oxford and the British School at Rome and was set for a career in academia until the beginning of the tech boom woke a lifelong interest in internet shares. Alex has spent her career visiting high security web hosting sites and speculating on what might go wrong. Winter Dark is her debut novel and the first in the Winter series.

I should have read the description

I love thrillers. I hated this book. She sees the suspect and says “hot” - I’m not here for romance.

Didn’t even get through the prologue

*Opening Spoilers *
A 17 year old “omni-sexual” girl with sufficient training, skill and strength to knock a highly trained male military officer unconscious with one hand ( because the other was in a cast) during an interview after being scouted by a Spy agency.

That’s the opening 10 minutes. I turned it off after that. I know why it was offered for free. Total garbage.

Death by round house kick. What nonsense

Hand to hand combat descriptions completely unrealistic. Lost me on these explanations. Believability is lacking.

Great Narration & Concept, Poor Execution

This was sooo hard to get into. The storyline is thrilling at first but it felt like the author was throwing too much at the reader at once which made the plot hard to keep up with; I kept finding myself asking “wait, what’s going on?”. I couldn’t finish this but since the narration stellar and the plot had potential, I’m hoping I can re-read it another time and find it more enjoyable (or at least actually get through the whole thing).

very entertaining

The narrative was great. great voice and characters.
The story propelled along at an exciting pace. This left me wanting further adventures from the lead protagonist.

A little too dystopian

I am sure that there is an audience for this book but it isn’t a good choice for me for bedtime reading. It is simply too dark and disturbing for my liking.

My biggest issue is how physically damaged she is and continues to engage in extreme violence. Too implausible. I slept through the last 5 chapters and have no desire to play it back for the resolution. I just don’t care.

Seems like such a great story.

This seems like such an amazing story; too bad about the choppy narration. Not sure if the story is written the way it's read, or the narrator decided to put her own spin on it, but it is so hard to follow. I don't even think I made it half way through the novel.

Good idea

Story was interesting but why all the sexual stuff? Throws everything off kilter and thrown in at the most in opportune of times. Doesn’t add anything to the story. Perhaps her relationship with the prince of darkness but the rest of her encounters, not needed.

Poor story, poor characters, poor narration.

Pathetic is probably the best way to describe this. A back story that is completely irrelevant to the plot, not to mention so completely unrealistic it's laughable. And it doesn't get better. I was constantly asking, wait, how did we get here, did I miss something? Nope, just the story jumping back and forth. Character development? What's that? Felt like a bad action movie where the trailer seems awesome but then the film bombs because it doesn't make any sense. Narration wasn't great either. I missed that a helicopter exploded and there was an avalanche because it was described in the same way the colour of a building was described.

Thoroughly enjoyed. The story and the narration.

Listened to this a second time as I was between books and was swept along again. Caught more of the nuances this time which made it even better. On to the next one now.
