Publisher's Summary

“The standard one-volume biography of Lincoln.” (Washington Post)

“Certainly the most objective biography of Lincoln ever written.” (David Herbert Donald, New York Times Book Review)

The definitive life of Abraham Lincoln, With Malice Toward None is historian Stephen B. Oates's acclaimed and enthralling portrait of America's greatest leader. In this award-winning biography, Lincoln steps forward out of the shadow of myth as a recognizable, fully drawn American whose remarkable life continues to inspire and inform us today.

Oates masterfully charts, with the pacing of a novel, Lincoln's rise from bitter poverty in America's midwestern frontier to become a self-made success in business, law, and regional politics. The second half of this riveting work examines his legendary leadership on the national stage as president during one of the country's most tumultuous and bloody periods, the Civil War years, which concluded tragically with Lincoln's assassination.

the perfect voice for an inspiring story

It's rare that the narration adds so much to my enjoyment of the story as this.

The story is beautifully told. You'll realize that nothing has changed in politics since Lincoln's time. This realization gives me hope that a person with Lincoln's balanced and nuanced perspective, caring for all people, and integrity can be effective in an environment of brash political rhetoric and fake news.

Fantastic

Taught me so much about a figure I had heard about my entire life and turned him into a friend. I grieved at the end and laughed throughout.

Masterful in All Respects

During my second year of college, I had the opportunity to attend a class taught by Professor Oates. Oates had a masterful way of weaving history and narrative together. This work on Lincoln is excellent in all respects and I highly recommend it to all.

Today, So Many More Need Listen-To & Know This History

Of the 100’s of audiobooks I’ve read, none as important in today’s ignorant & too often mis-informed times nor as professionally written, produced & narrated as “With Malice Toward None”. A must-read for anyone who cares to know of this greatest biography of or partake of the “American Dream”.

Illuminating

This book offers many details to fill out the well known outline of Lincoln’s life. Smith’s performance provides a convincing version of Lincoln’s quotes. Even 150 years later, it’s a powerful story.

This was one of the best books on Lincoln

This book covered Abraham Lincoln’s entire life in more personal detail than other books about Lincoln. I felt as though this author had known him personally. There were insights that gave nuanced details on Lincoln that I’ve never heard before. Especially during the presidential years. Stories on his relationships with cabinet members and family members had deeper insights. I loved it and encourage anyone to read it!
