Kel has finally achieved her lifelong dream of being a knight. But it's not turning out as she imagined at all. She is torn between a duty she has sworn to uphold and a quest that she feels could turn the tide of war. Unrelentingly realistic in its depiction of the horrors of war, Pierce provides exquisite details of the weaponry, topography, and culture of her world, and her control of a voluminous cast of characters is masterful.

Tamora Pierce should stick with writing the stories
I have very fond memories of these books from when I was a kid — and they still hold up!
However, Tamora as a narrator leaves something to be desired. Her slow, pedantic reading pace feels. Like. She. Is. Reading. One. Word. Sentences. All. The. Time. The narration portions desperately need to be re-recorded. The rest of the cast voices range from good to decent.

One of my favorites
I have read this book (and the other three books in the series) about once a year since it came out; one of my absolute favorite series, The Immortals. Full Cast Audio has made it even better since now I can enjoy it at work! The narration can be a little stilted but still enjoyable. I think they did an amazing job with the casting as well. I highly recommend any Full Cast Audio books, as well as any of Tamora Pierce's other books.

Finally, we get number 2
Having purchased Wild Magic, the first book in Pierce's Daine trilogy, I have been waiting a long time for this one. (They say that Emperor Mage, number 3, should be available around November.)
This is one of those books that I liked even better as an audiobook - Full Cast Audio did their usual excellent job.

Story fine, narration needs work
The full cast audio versions for these need work. While it can be interesting to have an author as the reader, and often good, it doesn’t work here. The narrated parts in between the characters speaking are extraordinarily slow and deliberate, and that’s coming from someone who grew up in the south and is used to a slower rhythm of speech. It takes a while to get into the story because of that, and can be jarring going back and forth between the characters and the narrator. This is one of the only books where I’ve sped up the playback speed, though it can only be sped up a tiny bit before the other voices become too fast. The actress who voices Daine (the main character) is slightly annoying too. She makes Daine’s voice very dramatic and excitable. The animals’ voices are generally fine. They’re what keeps the story going in the recorded versions of this series. If I hadn’t read the books in physical form first I’d probably not have made it all the way through. The story itself is ok, but a new recording would be highly beneficial.

A full cast performance is a trial to judge
Some of the performers were excellent, some were less enjoyable. The voice of Dane was the most grating and she was the protagonist. It tool a lot of getting used to, and I would prefer a single narrator, but that’s a personal preference. Objectively speaking the story itself is well enough and most of the performances were acceptable.

I loved these books ever since my sister shared them with me as a young teen! It is really fun to have it narrated by Tamora herself and have a full cast of Characters! It is sort of slow tho and another reviewer mentioned to listen to it sped up, that helped tremendously! Around 1.15-1.20 happy listening!
