Story
Before Liz Lemon, before Weekend Update, before Sarah Palin, Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: A recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV. She has seen both these dreams come true. At last, Tina Fey's story can be told. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live. Tina Fey reveals all, and proves what we've always suspected: You're no one until someone calls you bossy.

Anyone who saw an episode of Saturday Night Live between 1999 and 2006 knows Rachel Dratch. She was hilarious! So what happened to her? After a misbegotten part as Jenna on the pilot of 30 Rock, Dratch was only getting offered roles as "Lesbians. Secretaries. Sometimes secretaries who are lesbians." Her career at a low point, Dratch suddenly had time for yoga, dog- sitting, learning Spanish - and dating. After all, what did a forty-something single woman living in New York have to lose?

They came from completely different families, endured a significant age difference, and were separated by the gulf of several social strata. Megan loved books and art history; Nick loved hammers. But much more than these seemingly unsurpassable obstacles were the values they held in common: respect, decency, the ability to mention genitalia in almost any context, and an abiding obsession with the songs of Tom Waits.

Hi! I’m Seth! I was asked to describe my audiobook, Yearbook for websites and shit like that, so...here it goes!!! Yearbook is a collection of true stories that I desperately hope are just funny at worst, and life-changingly amazing at best. (I understand that it’s likely the former, which is a fancy “book” way of saying “the first one.”) I talk about my grandparents, doing stand-up comedy as a teenager, bar mitzvahs, and Jewish summer camp, and tell way more stories about doing drugs than my mother would like.

I'm so glad that's over
I am the type of person who has a hard time not finishing something once I've started it, and to be honest I kept expecting it would get better based on the other reviews.... but this was nothing more than a lame collection of name-droppy stories that were neither that funny nor that deep. The addition of other celebs and her parents to read parts and provide commentary was just unnecessary and fell flat. She didn't have enough of her own material to fill a book? And the final chapter, read "live" (or was that the world's worst laugh track) was just painful. Sorry Amy, I really expected better!

Gushy and Insecure
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It never quite delivered the way I wanted it to. I'd always heard of and understood Amy Poehler as a no-bullshit kind of lady, but she spends so much time in this book talking about how hard it was to write a book and how talented all her famous friends are, you just get the sense she's not saying any of the interesting things she could be saying if she had more confidence.
Has Yes Please turned you off from other books in this genre?
I loved Bossypants and Girl Walks Into A Bar, and I was expecting a bit more wisdom about life to come through the comedy, like with the other books. There were moments of that, but I just felt like there was so much second guessing and repetition that it never got to a place where you really went there with her. Plus she kept saying "ambivalence" when she meant "indifference" and I wondered what her editors were doing all day.
Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?
I really liked hearing Amy's mom read her life advice and chapters. They were really funny and I thought an interesting opportunity for looking at how different life is now for women and especially mothers. Amy didn't really pick up the thread, though. She also had all these people "in the booth" with her, and it seemed like another ploy to distract people from hearing what she had to say. But she mostly just got them to read chapter titles. Hearing Patrick Stewart read her haikus was pretty awesome, though.
Any additional comments?
I would like to see Amy write a second book where she cares less whether or not people like what she has to say. It's ironic because her extended message is to say whatever you want, do whatever you want, and be whoever you want, and she just doesn't seem to be taking her own advice. She keeps deflecting onto other people as if to avoid having to say anything she feels. I get the sense a bit of distance from her divorce and young children will put her back into her confidence and allow her to write from a more powerful place. She really was her own worst enemy in writing the book I think. I still think she's incredibly smart and funny and talented. I just wish she'd get out of her own way.

A lot of time spent saying how hard it is to write
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Not really. She had a few interesting tidbits but it really seemed like she didn't like writing this book.
Would you ever listen to anything by Amy Poehler again?
Not likely.
What three words best describe the narrators’s voice?
True to form.
Was Yes Please worth the listening time?
It was okay but I cannot recommend it.
Any additional comments?
I do like when the author is also the narrator.

In dire need of an editor
Amy mixes tales of her childhood, adolescence, hard work and dedication to her craft with present day reflections on "making it", motherhood and relationships.
Unfortunately, it felt like the book went from manuscript to print without being edited. I appreciate Amy's formidable improvisation chops, I just don't want to spend time with a half baked book.

I didn't realize you had to be a huge fan of Amy in order to read this. As it's basically a book about her life which she claims it not to be in the beginning.
I'm not a massive fan of Amy, more just a fan of funny women writing books in general. I didn't really take anything from this book apart from now knowing how her career started and how much she loves her kids. it's literally...all about her . nothing else.

Loved hearing Amy's story in her own voice. Also fabulous to hear wonderful celebrity special guests in here! All used to great effect! I'm happy she wrote a book so that I know more about who she is and where she came from. I highly recommend this book if you're a fan of comedy, of autobiographies, of UCB, of SNL and of Parks and Recreation.

Keeps Getting Better
What did you love best about Yes Please?
I expected it to be a silly book with funny stories but it was much more than that. It was also full of professional insight that should make sense to everyone. Her honesty is refreshing and genuine.
What other book might you compare Yes Please to and why?
This was my first audiobook. I have yet to find another one I like as much as this one.
