The Great Courses
À propos de cet audio
Psychology in the 21st century is not the seemingly static clinical field that you may have learned about in high school. Now there’s a substantial focus on “mindset” and the malleable nature of our experiences. When we understand how our mindset works, we can influence our behavior. There is also a greater emphasis on how the principles of psychology can help you to improve your everyday life, including how understanding your perceptions can help you to better understand the world.
Human beings are endlessly fascinating. Our social organization, our perceptions of the world, our emotional range, and our inner thoughts all define what it means to be human. The field of psychology has always been the scientific study of mental processes and behavior, helping us to understand ourselves and the world around us. How do we think, feel, and remember? Why do we act the way we do? And, most important, is there any way we can train our minds to improve our lives?
What’s new in the field of psychology is that many answers to these questions are beginning to be well understood. From the days of Freud and Skinner to the modern science of fMRIs and genetics, Introduction to Psychology is a grand introduction to one of the most captivating fields of inquiry - where the subject is you, and everyone around you. Taught by Professor Catherine A. Sanderson of Amherst College, these 36 insightful lessons not only give you a panoramic grounding in the history, methods, and fundamental findings of psychology, but they also introduce you to the most up-to-date 21st-century research and discoveries - including strategies to increase your happiness and to improve how to live your life.
When you complete Introduction to Psychology, you will come away with a new way of looking at the human experience. You will have gained insights to help you better understand yourself. And your new wealth of strategies will help you to think more clearly, be more courageous, strengthen relationships, and generally experience greater psychological and physical well-being.

One of the great insights of science is that the universe has an underlying order. The supreme goal of physicists is to understand this order through laws that describe the behavior of the most basic particles and the forces between them. For centuries, we have searched for these laws by studying the results of experiments. Since the 1970s, however, experiments at the world's most powerful atom-smashers have offered few new clues. So some of the world's leading physicists have looked to a different source of insight: modern mathematics.

Then, in the spring of 1933, Germany turned itself inside out, from a deeply divided republic into a one-party dictatorship. In Hitler's First Hundred Days, award-winning historian Peter Fritzsche offers a probing account of the pivotal moments when the majority of Germans seemed, all at once, to join the Nazis to construct the Third Reich.

Why do you have trouble controlling certain behaviors? We say some people march to the beat of a different drummer. But implicit in this cliché is that the rest of us march to the same beat. We sleepwalk through life, find ourselves on well-worn paths that were never ours to walk, and become a silent extra. Extraordinary people carve their own paths as leaders and creators. They think and act with genuine independence. They stand out from the crowd because they embody their own shape and color. We call these people geniuses—as if they’re another breed. But genius isn’t for a special few. It can be cultivated. This book will show you how.

Interesting and Engaging
Although I found the reader to be likeable and the content was great, her slight vocal fry was distracting at times. I hate to be negative, as I did enjoy the course and the enthusiasm of the reader, it's just that I have ADHD, so consider this if purchasing.

Very informative and educational
I’ve listened to a lot of books about psychology and the mind over the last year or so and this book is a great summary of all of them. There was a few things I found I’ve learned before but I still did learn new things. There’s a lot of references to studies that have been done which are always interesting to listen to. I especially enjoyed the chapter on pain and placebos, how we can trick our minds into thinking things will happen when you take a placebo and those things actually happen. People say the mind can play tricks on you, well you can play tricks on your mind! Definitely a book I recommend to anyone who is interested in psychology. Very well written and narrated.

Great content, grating delivery.
Really excellent introduction to this material! Unfortunately, for me, the author doesnt have the voice to present it. The timbre and diction of the writer/reader meant much shorter listens than the subject deserves. Important in an audio format.
